Solving problems using linear programming

 We can use inequalities and regions to solve certain mathematical
problems.
 First we must form inequalities from the information in the
problem.
 Then we graph the inequalities and from the graph we find the
solution or solutions.
 When the inequalities are linear the method is described above is
called linear programming.

Optimization
 The process of finding the solution that best fits the requirements
of a problem is called Optimization.
 This involves finding the maximum and minimum of the required
function. E.g. if it is profit, find the solution that gives maximum
profit. If it is cost we find the solution that gives minimum cost and
so on.
 To find the minimum and maximum we use the objective
function. This is the function which we intend to maximize or
minimize. It is of the form 𝑷 = 𝒂𝒙 + 𝒃𝒚 where p, a and b are
constants.
Examples:
1. The inequalities below describe a region R. 2𝑦 − 𝑥 < 8,
𝑥 + 𝑦 ≥ 6, 3𝑥 − 2𝑦 < 12, 𝑥 ≤ 6 .
(a) Illustrate region R on a graph.
(b) Find the coordinates of the point that maximize the function
3𝑥 + 2𝑦 in the region. (6, 7)
(c) Hence calculate the maximum value of the function 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 in
the region. (32)
2. Mrs. Mukasa is going to bake chocolate cakes and yellow cakes
to sell. She wants at least two chocolate cakes. Also she wants
more yellow cakes than chocolate cakes. Due to limited time and
facilities she cannot bake more than 10 cakes. The chocolate
cakes are to be sold for sh.1500 each and the yellow cakes for
sh.1000 each. To make a profit, more than sh.8000 must be
realized from the sales.
(a) How many cakes of each type should Mrs. Mukasa make in
order to make maximum profit?
(b) What is the minimum number of cakes that she can bake and
still make a profit?
Solution
Suppose she makes 𝑥 chocolate cakes and 𝑦 yellow cakes.

Then
𝑥 ≥ 2 ………….(1)
𝑦 > 𝑥 …………….(2)
𝑥 + 𝑦 ≤ 10 …………(3)
1500𝑥 + 1000𝑦 > 8000 ⟺ 3𝑥 + 2𝑦 > 16 ………(4)
Graph:
(a)
Combination Sales for Sales for Total sales
chocolate yellow cakes (shs)
cakes (shs) (shs)
(2, 6) 3000 6000 9000
(2, 7) 3000 7000 10000
(2, 8) 3000 8000 11000
(3, 4) 4500 4000 8500
(3, 5) 4500 5000 7500
(3, 6) 4500 6000 10500

(4, 5) 6000 5000 11000
(4, 6) 6000 6000 12000
The highest possible sales are sh.12000. Therefore 4 chocolate
cakes and 6 yellow cakes should be baked to maximize profit.
(b) The minimum profitable number of cakes is 7. i.e. 3 chocolate
cakes and 4 yellow cakes.

journeys a day. The costs of using an 8-tonne lorry and a 10-tonne
lorry are shs.40,000 and shs.60,000 respectively.
i. Write down your inequalities to represent the above
information.

ii. Plot a graph for the inequalities, shading out the unwanted
regions.
iii. From your graph, find the number of 10 – tonnes and 8- tonne
lorries the company used keeping its costs as minimal as
possible.
12. A private car park is designed in such away that it can
accommodate X pick-ups and y mini-buses at any given time.
Each pick-up is allowed 15m2 of space and each mini-bus 25m2 of
space. There is only 400m2 of space available for packing. Not more
than 35 vehicles are allowed in the park at a time. Both types of
vehicles are allowed in the park, but at most 10 minibuses are
allowed out a time.
A (i) write down all the inequalities to represent the above
information.
ii. On the same axes plot graph to represent the inequalities in (i)
above, shading out the unwanted regions.
c. If the parking charges for a pick-up is shs. 500 and that for a
minibus is shs. 800 per day find how many vehicles of each type
should be parked in order to obtain maximum income. Hence find
the maximum parking income per day.
13. A farmer plans to plant 18 hectare field with carrots and potatoes.
The farmer estimates for the project are shown in the table.
Carrots Potatoes
Planting and harvesting costs Shs. 95,000 Shs. 60,000
per hectare

No. of working hours per 12 days 4 days

hectares
Expected profit per hectare Shs. 228,000 151,000

The farmer has only shs.1,140,000 to invest in the project. The total
number of working days is 120.

(a) By letting x represent the number of he a totals to be planted with
potatoes, write down the inequalities for
i. Cost of the project
ii. Working days
iii. No of hectares used in the project.
iv. The possibility that the field will at least be used for planting
either carrots or potatoes.
(b) Write down an expression for the profit P in terms of X and y.
(c) (i) on same axes plot graphs of the inequalities in (a) and b above,
shading out un wanted regions.
(d) Use your graphs to determine how the farmer, should use the field
to maximize profit. Hence find the farmer’s maximum profit.
14. A wholesaler wishes to transport 870 crates of soda from a factory.
He has a lorry which can carry 150 crates at a time and a pick-up
truck which can carry 60 crates at a time. The cost of each journey
for the lorry is shs. 25,000 and for the pickup shs. 200,000. The
pick-up makes more journeys than the lorry because it travels for
transporting the soda is shs. 220,000.
i. Write down five inequalities representing the above
information.
ii. Plot a graph for the inequalities, shading out the unwanted
regions.
iii. How many journeys should the lorry and the pickup make so
as to keep the transport cost as law as possible. States how
much money the wholesaler saves by making these journeys.
15. A wild life club in a certain school wishes to go per an excursion to
a national park. The club has hired a mini-bus and a bus to take
students. Each trip for the bus to take students. Each trip for the
bus is shs. 50,000 and that of a mini-bus shs. 30,000. The bus has
a capacity of 54 students and the mini-bus 18 students. The maxim
number of students allowed to go for the excursion is 216. The
number of trips the bus makes do not have to exceed those made
by the minibus. The club has mobilized as much as shs. 380,000

for transportation of the students. If x and y represent the number
of trips made by the bus and mini-bus respectively.
i. Write down five inequalities representing the above
information.
ii. Plot these inequalities on the same axes.
iii. By shading the unwanted region, show the region satisfying all
the above inequalities.
iv. List the possible number of trips each vehicle can make.
v. State the greatest number of students who went for the
excursion.
