Excel Formatting Tutorial

In this tutorial, we will walk through the steps to format numbers and decimal digits, align
cells, merge cells, change fonts and sizes, apply cell borders, use colors and patterns, and
clear cell contents in Excel. Screenshots will be provided for each step.

1. Formatting Numbers and Decimal Digits


1. Select the cells containing the numbers you want to format.
2. Right-click the selected cells and choose 'Format Cells'.
3. In the 'Number' tab, select 'Number' for general number formatting or choose another
category (e.g., Currency, Percentage).
4. In the 'Decimal places' box, specify the number of decimal places you want.

2. Alignment: Cell Alignment, Indenting, and Orientation


To align text within cells:
1. Select the cells you want to align.
2. Use the alignment options in the ribbon under the 'Home' tab to align text horizontally
and vertically.
3. To change the text orientation, click the 'Orientation' button and choose the desired angle.
4. To indent text within cells, click the 'Increase Indent' or 'Decrease Indent' buttons.

3. Wrapping Text
To wrap text within cells:
1. Select the cells containing the text you want to wrap.
2. Go to the 'Home' tab, and in the 'Alignment' group, click 'Wrap Text'.

4. Merging Cells
To merge cells:
1. Select the cells you want to merge.
2. Go to the 'Home' tab, and in the 'Alignment' group, click 'Merge & Center'.
3. You can also select 'Merge Across' or 'Merge Cells' for different merging options.

5. Changing Fonts and Sizes
To change the font and size of text:
1. Select the cells containing the text you want to format.
2. Go to the 'Home' tab, and in the 'Font' group, choose the desired font and size from the
dropdown lists.

6. Applying Cell Borders


To apply borders around cells:
1. Select the cells where you want to add borders.
2. Go to the 'Home' tab, and in the 'Font' group, click the 'Borders' dropdown and choose the
desired border style.

7. Using Colors and Patterns


To apply colors and patterns to cells:
1. Select the cells you want to format.
2. Go to the 'Home' tab, and in the 'Font' group, click 'Fill Color' to apply a background color.
3. Click 'More Colors' for additional color options or 'Pattern Fill' for more pattern styles.

8. Using the Format Painter


To copy formatting from one cell to another:
1. Select the cell with the formatting you want to copy.
2. Go to the 'Home' tab and click the 'Format Painter' button.
3. Click on the target cell(s) to apply the formatting.

9. Clearing Cell Contents and Formatting


To clear the contents or formatting of cells:
1. Select the cells you want to clear.
2. Go to the 'Home' tab, click the 'Clear' button in the 'Editing' group, and choose 'Clear All',
'Clear Contents', or 'Clear Formats'.
