L E or a greater

An inequality is similar to an equation except there is a less than/equal to ____________

2 sign within the numerical relationship. In a regular equation, there is
than/equal to ____________
typically only ONE single solution, whereas an inequality has a range of solutions.
A solution of ! = # means that 5 is the ONLY solution,
whereas ! > # includes all numbers greater than 5.
The difference between <, > and ≤, ≥ is that the ‘equal to’ signals that the value should be included in
the solution set where as in simply the ‘greater/less than’ the value should NOT be included in the
solution set of possible answers.

) > 40 possible solutions:41, 42, 43, 44 … ) < 40 possible solutions: 39, 38, 37, 36 …
) ≥ 40 possible solutions:40, 41, 42, 43 … ) ≤ 40 possible solutions: 40, 39, 38, 37 …

Write an inequality for each situation. DO NOT SOLVE. Pay close attention to the language that
signals what kind of sign to include in the inequality!

Four more than the product of 3 and ) is at least 40. 4 3 240

Solving Multi-Step Inequalities: Inequalities will be solved

much like multi-step equations, but they have an extra step of
graphing on a number line at the end. When graphing on the
number line, the kind of dot placed at the beginning of the
solution set matters!

• An open dot indicates < or > because it illustrates that

this value is NOT included in the solution set. Ex: ) > 11
• A closed dot indicates ≤ or ≥ because it illustrates that
this value IS included in the solution set. Ex: ) ≤ 11

−3) − 3 < 15
Begin solving the inequality to isolate
the variable as you would with an 3
algebraic equation.

Inequalities with Special Solutions: Just like with multi-step equations, inequalities can have a
range of solutions (Ex: ! > #), no solution, or infinite solutions.

No solution occurs when the ending statement in the inequality is FALSE and can NEVER be true. Ex:
−4 > 6
Infinite solution occurs when the ending statement in the inequality is TRUE and will ALWAYS be
true. Ex: −4 < 6

14) + 5 ≤ 7(2) − 3) −4(29 − 1) > 1 − 89
