The imperative
A
Affirmative Negative

Stop! Don’t stop!


• We use the imperative when we want to tell someone to do something.
• We put the verb at the beginning of the sentence to form the imperative.
Example: Come here, James!
Stand up!
• When we want to tell someone that they must not to do something, we put Don’t
beginning of the sentence.
Example: Don’t close the door!
Don’t sit on the chair!
• When we want to be polite, we put the word please at the beginning or the end
of the sentence.
Example: Please help me!
Open the window, please.
B Suggestions
When we suggest something, we often use the following expressions.
• Let’s ............ (Let’s .... is followed by a verb in the bare infinitive.)
Example: Let’s go to the cinema.
• Why don’t we ...............? (Why don’t we ......... is followed by a verb in the bare
infinitive.)
Example: Why don’t we go to the cinema?
• What/ How about .........? (What/ How about .........? is followed by a verb with

an – ING ending.)

Example: How about going to the cinema?

1. We use can/ can’t to talk about ability.

• Can is followed by a bare infinitive and does not change.

Example: I can swim. She can swim. They can swim.

• We put not after can to form a negative sentence. Can and not become one

word: cannot. The short form is can’t.

Example: We cannot sleep. You can’t ride a bike.

• When we want to ask a question, we put can at the beginning of the sentence,

then the personal pronoun, noun or name (e.g I, you, we, they, he, she, it, the

bird, John …) and then the main verb.

Example: Can you dance? Yes, I can.

Can he drive a car? No, he can’t.

2. We use can to make informal requests.

Example: Can you open the door, please?

3. We use can to offer to do things.

Example: Can I take you to school? Can I carry those bags for you?

4. We use can to talk about permission and rules.

Example: Can we play in the garden?
