Sri Lankan International School Riyadh

About Us:

Founded in 1988 under the directive of former Ambassador A.L.M. Hassim, Sri Lankan International
School Riyadh has been providing quality education to expatriate Sri Lankan students and students of
various nationalities for over three decades. Our commitment to holistic education, human values, and
embracing Sri Lankan tradition has earned us a reputation as the top Pearson Edexcel Learning Centre
of Excellence in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In 2021, SLISR relocated to a purpose-built school in the Siyah District, thanks to the efforts of
likeminded Sri Lankan professionals. Over the years, we have produced successful individuals who
hold prominent positions worldwide, and our graduates consistently secure scholarships at renowned
universities globally.

Highlights of our achievements include multiple Pearson Edexcel Awards and being recognized as the
Pearson Edexcel Regional & Country Outstanding Learners Awards 202.3.

SLISR Computer Lab upgrade Project

Project Description:
SLISR's Computer Labs for Boys & Girls, established in 1995, have been the cornerstone of our
commitment to providing quality education. However, the current infrastructure, consisting of 3rd
Generation PCs with Core is processors and 4GB RAM using wireless network adapters for internet
connectivity resulting in slow internet browsing. This is no longer sufficient to meet the demands of
the rapidly evolving IT industry and the growing interest of our students in Information Technology.

Recognizing this need for improvement, we are embarking on a comprehensive infrastructure upgrade
project. This upgrade will encompass not only the replacement of outdated hardware with state-ofthe-
art systems boasting higher processing power and enhanced memory capacities but also the integration
of new network appliances and technologies. By investing in cutting-edge equipment and adapting to
the latest advancements in IT infrastructure, we aim to provide our students with an environment
conducive to their academic pursuits and to better prepare them for the dynamic challenges of the
modern digital landscape.

In light of this, we are embarking on a crucial initiative to upgrade both Computer Labs, ensuring our
students have access to the latest technology and are well-prepared for post-secondary education. We
believe that hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology is essential for their academic and
professional success.
Our school parents fall mostly in the middle to lower income categories and the fact that we are
charging a nominal amount as school fee which is only enough to cover salaries and maintenance cost
of the school.

Hence, we seek donations from well-wishers for projects of this nature as the school does not have
the financial capacity to do so on its own. Your contributions will play a pivotal role in transforming
SLISR into a technology-equipped institution capable of meeting the dynamic needs ofour students.
Together, let us empower our students with the tools and resources necessary to thrive in today's digital
age.

Current SLISR Lab Network Architecture

Current Architecture

• Each machine has a wireless adapter

• Connects to the Wireless AP to access the internet
• Applications installed on machines one by one

pros Cons
Cable free Not centralized
Not scalable

Cost effective Slower internet speeds

No data backup

Less secure

No monitoring

Harder to manage
7

Pros

1) Cable free

Wireless networks allow devices to connect without the need for physical cables,
which can be a huge advantage in environments where laying cables is impractical or
expensive. This makes installation faster, easier, and more flexible, particularly in dynamic or
expanding environments.

2) Cost effective

Wireless networks can be more cost-effective than wired ones, especially for large areas or
temporary setups. There’s no need for costly physical infrastructure like cables, connectors,
or switches.

Cons

1) Non centralized

Many wireless networks, especially peer-to-peer or ad-hoc ones, lack a central management
system. This decentralized nature makes it hard to efficiently manage and control the flow
of data or enforce consistent policies.

2) Non-Scalable
Wireless networks can struggle to handle large-scale operations. As more devices connect,
bandwidth gets divided among them, leading to slower performance. Also, managing many
devices in a decentralized structure is challenging.

3) Slower Internet Speeds

Wireless networks, especially those reliant on older Wi-Fi standards, tend to offer slower
speeds compared to wired networks. Physical barriers, distance, and interference can further
degrade performance.

4) No Data Backup
Wireless networks typically don't have inherent data backup mechanisms. Without
centralized servers or storage, each device is responsible for its own data, which increases
the risk of data loss.
8

5) Less secure

Wireless networks are more susceptible to security risks compared to wired networks. They
broadcast data over the air, making them vulnerable to eavesdropping, unauthorized access,
or other attacks if proper security measures (like encryption) are not enforced.

6) No Monitoring

Without centralized management, it’s difficult to monitor network traffic, detect anomalies,
or track the behavior of connected devices. This makes it harder to prevent unauthorized
access or troubleshoot performance issues.

Proposed SLISR Lab Network Architecture

Proposed Solutions
• Servers Two HPE-AD & File Server
• Anti-Virus - 80 ESET AV
• One Firewall – PfSense Opensource
• Core Switch 16 Port HPE Switch
• L2 Switch-4 HPE 24 port switch - Workstations
• L2 Switch-1 HPE 16 Port switch- Servers
• UPS for each computer – 80

pros Cons
Can centrally manage all user creation, software Cost
installation via AD Requires expertise to manage the
network
Easily scalable and provides security

Can monitor students’ activity via proxy

Each segment will be segregated with VLANS

All students can access files via file server All

files will be backed up to NAS

Pros

1) Can centrally manage all user creation, software

Centralized user management through AD simplifies the creation and control of user accounts
and software installations across all connected devices. This reduces manual efforts and
ensures consistency.

2) Easily Scalable & Secure:

The network can expand easily by adding more devices or users while maintaining security
with access controls, authentication, and encryption.

3) Monitor Student Activity via Proxy:

A proxy server allows administrators to monitor and filter student internet activities, ensuring
compliance with usage policies.

4) Segmentation with VLANs:

Virtual LANs (VLANs) create distinct segments in the network, improving performance and
security by isolating different groups (e.g., students, staff, and guests).

5) File Access via File Server:

10

Students can access shared files stored on a central server, enabling collaboration and resource
sharing.

6) Backup to Network-Attached Storage (NAS):

All files can be automatically backed up to a NAS, ensuring data integrity and protection
against data loss.

Cons

1) Cost:

Implementing a network with central management, VLANs, and backup infrastructure

involves significant upfront and maintenance costs.

2) Requires Expertise:

Managing a sophisticated network with AD, proxies, VLANs, and file servers requires
specialized knowledge and skills.
