On October 15th, I went and saw the Video Game Orchestra perform The Music of Nintendo.

did not arrive late this time, thankfully!

I was really excited to see the orchestra perform video game music, as video game soundtracks

are one of my favorite genres i would say! They did not disappoint at all, the only

disappointment was the quality of sound for the mics and for the guitar. As someone who is very

interested in sound, it was not the best. But, other than that, the orchestra was fun to listen to

and was amazing in every sense of the word.

Their opening song was Jump Up, Superstar from Super Mario Odyssey. They had a soloist,

Kaydee Tullo, and she was amazing. It was just shivers and awe over her voice with the

orchestra following along with her. It was a very fast but groovy song that had energy all

throughout it. The pitch with the singer, especially the higher parts, was amazing and they all did

a great job.

Kass’ Theme from Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild was the next one, a simple and short

waltz type of song. It was very flowy and soft, delicate and nice to listen to! Then, Kirby 20th

Anniversary came on, and it played around with the dynamics. It was loud and quiet, then fast

but soft, which was very interesting to listen to. A very bouncy song to listen to.

After that, Towards the Heavens came on from Xenoblade Chronicles 3. The title is just right for

this song, it felt like an accession upwards. The soft orchestra playing while the choir sings

beautifully blended into them. A slow and soft build, mystical sounding and a piano solo for a

peaceful fading out ending. It was absolutely beautiful.

Then, coming in for a complete 180, we have Symphony of the Goddess from Legend of Zelda:

Breath of The Wild. It was absolutely spectacular. It’s definitely my favorite piece from this

performance tonight. It was very intense and fast, but then dying down in the middle for a

quieter relief and swelling down. But then, the build up of the choir and sinister music transfering

over to… a soft melodic sound, a flowing tune as if it was a breath of fresh air before something

else happens and we are back to the fast, battle-esque music.the dynamics are so fun here!

Going from soft and quiet to loud and harsh throughout the entire song was fun to witness and

the choir participated in that as well.

Moving on, We have a classic piece again. Super Smash Bros Battlefield. It was intense and

fast, however I did have a little disappointment at the guitar solo because of how quiet it was? It

was just a little too quiet for me personally. Then, they play Xenoblade Chronicles III: Main

theme. It was a quiet and softer, slower piece then the previous one. I really like how they have

very contrasting pieces after each other. The piano was above everyone else, and it was so

peaceful and so nice to have.

For the finale, the Video Game Orchestra performed Super Mario Galaxy’s Symphonic suite.

Throughout the piece, there's different dynamics and different styles of music going on. The

opening build up was great to hear, and the different solos throughout the piece was also fun to

witness as well. I also heard the strings which was really nice, as they are so impressive. The

dynamics is definitely the strongest part here, transferring loud to quiet, fast to slow, soft to

intense, and yet it all flows together perfectly still.

In the end, I enjoyed seeing this performance so much and I’m grateful I got to watch it. The

Video Game Orchestra is a very impressive group of students and I am definitely going to future

performances of theirs.
