COURSE TITLE: INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

COURSE LEVEL : YEAR 1, SEMESTER 1

PRE-REQUISITE: PROGRAMME ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course is designed to enable students to understand computer systems and functions and how
they are used by various sectors of the community. In this course the learner will acquire basic
proficiency skills in the use of the computer as a tool to source information and prepare documents and
will acquire beginning skills in the following commonly used application software: excel, word
processing, database, desktop publishing, power point and the internet.

RATIONALE
This course is designed to ensure that the professional nurse can function at the cutting edge of
technology in the delivery of nursing care.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
At the end of the programme the professional nurse will be able to:
1. Demonstrate awareness of the importance of information and communication technology in a modern
society.
2. Utilize knowledge and skill in information and communication technology to advance their personal
and professional agendas.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES
At the end of this course the students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the basic use of a computer.
2. Use software packages to perform basic related tasks.
3. Practice good computer ethics.
4. Use the computer as a source of health information and for networking.
5. Utilize computer applications in the advancement of Nursing and Health.
CONTENT OUTLINE
Unit 1: Basic Concepts
- Technology revolution
- Applications of ICT
- Effects of use of computer technology systems on society.
- Ethics related to computer technology
- Use of computer is society

Unit 2: Hardware
- Input devices - keyboard, mouse, etc
- Output devices - printer, monitor etc
- Processor Unit - microprocessors – 86’s, Pentiums etc
- Primary Storage Devices - RAM, ROM – byte, kilo byte, megabyte, gigabyte
- Secondary Storage Devices - Hard disk, floppy disks, CD-ROM, DVD, thumb drives

Unit 3: Software
- Categories of Software – system, application and utilities
- System software – function, examples
- Launching MS Windows
- Maneuvering in Windows environment – open, close, resize windows etc

Unit 4: Basic Computer Operating Systems


- Word processing
- Excel
- Databases
- Publishing
- Power point
- Internet
- Storage and retrieval of information
- Basic networking

TEACHING METHODOLOGY
This course may be outsource based on a memorandum of understanding between the educational
institution and relevant available tender. This course will be taught using lectures, discussion,
demonstrations, return demonstrations, individual presentations.

LABORATORY ASSIGNMENT
Student will use the computer laboratory to practice use of the computer

CLINICAL ATTACHMENT
None

CLINICAL ASSIGNMENT
The student will be expected to complete an assignment as part of course requirements. This
assignment may constitute preparation of a work document, spreadsheet, published document or
short power point presentation.

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION

The student is expected to have a 95% attendance in all classroom sessions.


The student is expected to complete and submit an assignment within stipulated time. Weight
10%
The student is expected to complete four in-course tests, each weighted at 5% of total grade, with
an overall weight of 20%
The student must sit the end of course examination, which constitutes 70% of total grade.
The student must gain at least 60% overall to be successful in the course.
The examination questions may be essays and/or objective type items.
The student must demonstrate an acceptable level of performance in related clinical and
laboratory skills.
