Assignment 1: Due 5/02/24

Problem 1. Prove that the volume of the primitive cell of the simple√ hexagonal structure in the
crystal space, which is the average volume per atom, is given by V0 = 23 a2 c. Where a1 , a2 , and a3
are the primitive lattice vectors: |a1 | = |a2 | = a , |a3 | = c

Problem 2. Show that the angle between any two of the lines (bonds) joining a site of the diamond
lattice to its four neighbors is cos−1 ( 31 ) = 1090 28′

Problem 3. Gallium arsenide (GaAs) has a zinc-blende crystal structure. Answer the following
questions about GaAs. (Assume a lattice spacing of a = 5.65 Angstroms = 0.565 nm.)
a) What is the density of GaAs in gm/cm3 ?
b) How many atoms/cm3 are there in GaAs?
c) How many valence electrons per cm3 are there in GaAs?
d) What is the closest spacing between adjacent arsenic atoms in GaAs?

Problem 4. Find the Miller indices of a plane that makes intercepts on ⃗a,⃗b and ⃗c axis equal to 3,4
& 3Åin a tetragonal crystal with a = b, c/a = 1 : 5.

Problem 5. For a mono-atomic simple cubic lattice with potential

where r0 = 2.8Å, α = 0.5eV /Å and β = 0.1eV /Å , find the equilibrium lattice constant.

Problem 6. The conductivity and the Hall coefficient of a n-type silicon specimen are 112Ω–1 m–1 and1.25×
10–13 m3 C –1 respectively. Calculate the charge carrier density.

Problem 7. Find the lengths of the intercepts made by the planes of Miller indices (111) and (123)

the planes cut an intercept of 7.15 Åalong the z-axis.

Problem 8. Prove that an oblique lattice gives rise to a centered rectangular lattice after reflection.

Problem 9. Prove the following theorem : For any family of lattice planes separated by a distance
d, there are reciprocal lattice vectors perpendicular to the planes, the shortest of which have a length
of 2π
d
.

Problem 10. Sodium chloride has a fcc structure. Its density is 2.18 x 103 kg/m3 . The atomic
