TRIBHUVAN UNIVERSITY Regular 2077

INSTITUTE OF ENGINEERING Level BE Full Marks 80

Program BAME Pass Marks 32

Code: AM 78504
Year/Part IV/II Time 3 Hrs.

Subject: System Design and Simulation (Elective III)

√ Candidates are required to give their answers in their own words as far as practicable.
√ Attempt All questions.
√ The figures in the margin indicate Full Marks.

1. What are the things to be considered while designing a machine component? [10]

2. What is simulation? Why preprocessing is considered important step in design [3+4]

analysis ?

3. What are methods of geometric generations ? Explain with figures ?

[10]

4. How do you start meshing in analysis ? Suppose you are a part of a newly formed
CAE group, there are no clear guidelines available and there is no experienced
person in your group to teach you , in such scenario, how do you decide element [5+5]
length in meshing ?

5. What is fracture ? What are the types of fracture explain with figures?

[2+8]

6. The following data is given for a four-stroke diesel engine:

Cylinder bore = 250 mm, Length of stroke = 300 mm, Speed = 600 rpm [15]
Indicated mean effective pressure = 0.6 MPa
Mechanical efficiency = 80%
Maximum gas pressure = 4 MPa
Fuel consumption = 0.25 kg per BP per h
Higher calorific value of fuel = 44 000 kJ/kg
Assume that 5% of the total heat developed in the cylinder is transmitted by the piston.
The piston is made of grey cast iron FG 200 (Sut = 200 N/mm2 and k = 46.6 W/m/°C)
and the factor of safety is 5. The temperature difference between the centre and the
edge of the piston head is 220°C. You are allowed to assume missing data.
(i) Calculate the thickness of piston head by strength consideration.
(ii) Calculate the thickness of piston head by thermal consideration.
(iii) Which criterion decides the thickness of piston head?
(iv) State whether the ribs are required.
(v) If so, calculate the number and thickness of piston ribs.

7. Assume that you are newly hired employee at ABC airlines, the regular air fare
between Kathmandu and Dhangadi is Rs 5000. The airline using planes with a
capacity of 300 passengers on this route observes that they fly with an average of 180 [10]
passengers. Market research tells the airlines’ managers that each Rs 50 fare reduction
would attract, on average, 3 more passengers for each flight. How should they set the
fare to maximize their revenue?

1. What is simulation? Explain the steps to be followed in simulation? [3+7]

2. What are the types of modelling? What are the Boolean operations used in modelling? [6+4]
Explain with figures?

3. What is structural analysis explain with its types? Explain linear and nonlinear
structural analysis?
[6+4]

4. Explain the general design considerations for following IC engine components?

a) Crank shaft [3]
b) Piston [3]
c) Cylinder block and cylinder head [4]

5.
a. What is meshing? Explain with its type?
b. What are the types of fatigue analysis? What is endurance limit and factor of [5+5]
safety?
6. Oil with dynamic viscosity of µ=0.3 N.s/m2 and density of ρ=900 kg/m3 flows
through the piping network shown in figure 6. The 2-4-5 branch was added in parallel
to the 2-3-5 branch to allow for the flexibility of performing maintenance on one [15+5]
branch while the oil flows through the other branch. The dimensions of the piping
system are shown in figure 6. The flow rate at node 1 is 5x10-4 m3/s. The pressure at
node 1 is 39182 Pa (g) and pressure at node 6 is -3665 Pa (g). For the given conditions,
the flow is laminar throughout the system. Determine the pressure distribution in the
system if both branches are on line. How does the flow divide in each branch?

7. Assume that you have been asked to look into purchasing some storage tanks for your
company, and for the purchase of these tanks, you are given a budget of $1680. After
some research, you find two tank manufacturers that meet your requirements. From [10]
manufacturer A, you can purchase 16-ft3 capacity tanks that cost $120 each.
Moreover, this type of tank requires a floor space of 7.5 ft2. Manufacturer B makes
24 ft3 capacity tanks that costs $240 each and that require a floor space of 10ft2. The
tanks will be placed in a section of lab that has 90 ft2 of floor space available for
storage. You are looking for the greatest storage capability with in the budgetary and
floor space limitation. How many of each tank must you purchase?
