Experiment1
Student Name: Aman Thakur UID: 22BCS16401
Branch:CSE Section/Group: 901-A
Semester: 5 Date of Performance:26-07-24
Subject Name: Computer Network Subject Code: 22CSH-312

1. Aim: Study of different types of Network cables & their Color

coding and practically implement the cross-wired cable
and straight through cable using crimping tool.

2. Objective:

Understand concepts of Cabling and color code.

3. Input/Apparatus Used:
RJ-45 connector, Crimping Tool, Twisted pair Cable.

4. PROCEDURE:

Step 1: Strip the Cable Jacket:

a) Using a wire stripper, carefully strip about 1.5 inches of the outer
jacket from the end of the cable.
b) For Cat 5e: If more jacket needs to be stripped, use the pull string to
extend the strip and then cut the pull string.
c) For Cat 6: You will also need to cut the plastic spine inside the cable.

COMPUTER SCIENCE & ENGINEERING

Step 2: Spread and Prepare the Wires:

a) Spread the four twisted pairs of wires apart.

b) Untwist the pairs and straighten them. Be careful not to untwist

them beyond where the jacket starts to maintain the cable's
integrity.

Step 3: Arrange the Wires in T568B Orientation

1. Arrange the wires in the following order, from left to right (when
holding the connector with the clip facing down):
o Orange-white
o Orange
o Green-white
o Blue
o Blue-white
o Green
o Brown-white
o Brown

Step 4: Trim the Wires

a) Cut the wires straight across, about 0.5 inches above the end of the
jacket. Ensure they are even and straight.

Step 5: Insert Wires into the Connector

a) Hold the RJ45 connector with the clip facing down.

b) Carefully insert the wires into the connector, ensuring each wire
passes through the appropriate guide inside the connector.

COMPUTER SCIENCE & ENGINEERING

c) Push the wires in until the ends are flush with the front of the
connector and the jacket is inside the connector.

Step 6: Crimp the Connector

a) Insert the connector into the crimping tool.

b) Squeeze the crimper all the way down to secure the wires and attach
the connector.

Step 7: Terminate the Other End

a) Repeat steps 1-6 for the other end of the cable.

Step 8: Test the Cable

a) Use a cable tester to ensure each pin is correctly terminated.

b) Connect the cable to the tester and check for connectivity.

Cross-wired Connection (if needed)

a) If making a crossover cable, use the T568A standard on one end and
T568B on the other.

b) T568A order: Green-white, Green, Orange-white, Blue, Blue-white,

Orange, Brown-white, Brown.

Final Check

a) Ensure both connectors are securely attached.

b) Test the cable again to confirm it works correctly.

5. LEARNING OUTCOMES:

1. Understand Cable Preparation Techniques: I will be able to

accurately strip the cable jacket, spread and untwist wire pairs,
and prepare the wires for termination while maintaining cable
integrity.

2. Master Wire Arrangement: I will be able to arrange the untwisted

wires into the correct T568B or T568A orientation, understanding
the significance of each color code in the Ethernet standard.

3. Perform Accurate Termination: I will be able to cut, insert, and

crimp wires into an RJ45 connector correctly, ensuring a secure
and reliable connection.
