Introduction and Installation 1

About this Chapter

This chapter describes

• Functions and features of WebVIEW

• Specifications
• Requirements
• Providing connections on the MedLAN network
• Providing DEP (Data Entry Panel) Network connections.

Introduction to WebVIEW

WTC's WebVIEW product lets you remotely view and modify

programmable data and monitor the weld data that a MedWeld
weld control stores and produces. Most operations in WebVIEW
operate through a standard Web browser, with only SPC data
collection requiring a stand-alone application.

WebVIEW supports the following functions:

• Logging the last three hundred (300) combined Notices,

Faults and Weld Data items for each WCU. All items are
timed stamped, along with the username of the person that
caused the change (if Basic or LDAP security is enabled).
• Programming Sequences, Setup, and Stepper Profiles along
with other weld control specific features.
• Monitor Fault, Stepper Status, I/O Status and Weld Data.
Both on an individual, and network basis.
• Display weld control information, such as weld control serial
numbers, software revision and communication errors.

WebVIEW Operation Guide 1-1

M-038140
Introduction and Installation

• Backing up and restoring weld control programmable data.

Specifications WebVIEW is a family of products, each product interfaces with

the user in the same way. The difference between WebVIEW(s) is
the number of weld controls that each WebVIEW can support.

Hardware Common to All Versions:

• Power Requirement: 85 - 250 VAC at 50 or 60 Hz.
• Ethernet 10-BaseT, RJ-45
• Console Port, DB-9 Female
• Indicators on each MedLAN channel to show activity.
• Power Indicator

Hardware Unique to Each Version:

• Single Channel: One (1) MedLAN channel, support for up to
30 MedWeld Controls.
• Dual Channel: Two (2) MedLAN channels support up to 60
MedWeld Controls, 30 MedWeld controls on each channel.
• Quad Channel: 4 MedLAN channels support for up to 120
MedWeld Controls (30 MedWeld controls on each channel).
• Ethernet: 2 Virtual MedLAN channels supporting up to 24
devices per channel over ethernet.
NOTE: Thirty (30) MedWeld controls is the maximum number of controls
allowed per channel for serial communications, and may not be
recommended in all cases. Depending on how critical weld data
collection is, the number could be considerably less.

Minimum Software:
Requirements • Internet Explorer v4.0 or later
• Netscape Navigator v 4.7x
• Java Script MUST be enabled in the browser.
• Sun Java Plug-in version 1.3 or later MUST be installed. The
Java plug-in can be obtained at either www.javasoft.com or
www.sun.com.

Minimum Hardware:
Requirements • Windows 95 or better.

1-2 WebVIEW Operation Guide

M-038140
Introduction and Installation

• Pentium 233MHz or better.

• 64 MB of memory above requirements for the operating
system.
• Hard Drive space allocated for the collection of data records.
An average control is capabile of collecting 15 MB per weld
control when using the stand-alone spc data collection
software.

Operating Environment:
Ensure that the operating environment for the WebVIEW meets
these requirements:

• Temperature: 10° to 50° C. (50° to 120° F.)

• Humidity: 8 – 90% relative humidity, non-condensing.

Storage Environment
• Temperature: –40° to 60° C. (–40° to 140° F.)
• Humidity: 8 – 90% relative humidity, non-condensing.

Installation

Providing MedLAN MedLAN (WTC’s Local Area Network) is a proprietary

Connections communications protocol. It defines how devices on the network
communicate with each other.

Setting WCU Network Addresses:

The MedLAN address identifies each weld
Warning! control's location on the network. Each weld
control must be programmed a unique address
BEFORE communications over a MedLAN
channel is possible. Valid ranges for MedLAN
address are 0 through 29, which permits a
maximum of 30 devices per-channel.

WebVIEW Operation Guide 1-3

M-038140
Introduction and Installation

For the MedLAN network you MUST use a DEP-100S (Data

Entry Panel) or on integrated controls the robot teach pendent to
program a unique address in each WCU that will be on the same
MedLAN channel. If using a DEP-100S, it must be connected to
the DEP port of the weld control. If you do not program a unique
MedLAN address in each WCU, communication errors will
result and the MedLAN channel will become disabled.

MedLAN and The MedLAN cable connection originates at the 3-pin terminal
WEbView strip connector on the bottom of the WebVIEW unit. There will be
one connector for each channel supported on the WebVIEW unit.
Connections This cable runs to the 3-pin MedLAN terminal strip connector on
the weld control card.

For network configurations, the MedLAN cable connection is

daisy-chained to the other controls that are designated to be on
the same MedLAN network.

Cable Requirements
WTC recommends using Belden 9463 cable or equivalent. The
following table lists the MedLAN cable pinouts of WebVIEW and
the weld controls.

Designator Pin # Function Wire Color Function

MDL2 3 MedLAN Line 2 Clear This is the TX/RX+ line of the

RS-485 signal.

MDLS* 2 Line Shield Bare Wire Shield/drain

MDL1 1 MedLAN Line 1 Blue This is the TX/RX- line of the

RS-485 signal.

Cable Routing Requirements

Wire the MedLAN network ONLY in a “daisy-chain” method.
NEVER use “stub” wiring.

The maximum total length of the MedLAN network cable is

3,000 feet. Up to 30 weld controls may be connected to a single
MedLAN network.

A maximum of one (1) WebVIEW unit may be connected to a

MedLAN network. A four (4) channel WebVIEW unit may
connect up to four (4) different MedLAN networks.

1-4 WebVIEW Operation Guide

M-038140
Introduction and Installation

The MedLAN cable wire ends terminate into MTSB (Phoenix)

connectors. Terminate the cable using the following procedure:

1. Strip 1 inch off the cable jacket.

2. Remove foil shield strands out side the foil.
3. Cover the shield with heat shrink.
4. Cover the cable insulation end with one inch of heat-shrink
tubing.
5. Strip 1/4 inch of insulation off each wire.
6. Install wires in each connector as shown in Figure 1 below.
7. Torque the terminal screws to 5 in.-lb.
NOTE: You must provide strain relief at the MedLAN cable entry and exit
points at the weld control enclosure. If the enclosure requires drilling
entry/exit holes, exercise extreme caution to assure that no metal
shavings fall where damage may occur and/or remain inside the
enclosure.

Warning! Be certain to cover all components to protect

them from metal shavings. Metal debris (from
drilling into the cabinet) can cause catastrophic
failure. The WTC warranty does NOT cover
damage caused by metal debris.

• Physically separate the MedLAN cable from wiring greater

than 50 V. If the MedLAN cable must cross this wiring, it
must do so at a 90° angle.
• Refer to the interconnect drawing (next page).

Web Service Configuration

WebVIEW is designed to talk to a set of Web Services that are

listening on Port 8080. If because of network considerations this
is determined to be a problem, the Web Services can be turned
off, and an alternate method of communications will be used that
goes through the web server on port 80.

Note: Using port 80 and turing OFF the web services will greatly
reduce the throughput of the system. As cgi scripts will be
required, to do all processing of WebService commands.

Below is an example Web Services configuration session.

M-038140
Introduction and Installation

Security Setup

WebVIEW has the following security levels:

• None: WebVIEW poses no security, any one that connects to

the WebVIEW can do anything.
• Basic: WebVIEW requires each person that connects to log
into the WebVIEW system. WebVIEW support 10 registers
uses plus a GUEST account. Each user is required to have a
password, while the GUEST account does not require a
password. Each user can be assigned permissions that if
allowed, allows Weld Control information to be changed.
The GUEST user can be disabled if required.

• LDAP: Same as the Basic with the exception that there is no

GUEST account and passwords are checked against a Plant
wide LDAP system, using either SIMPLE or SASL
authentication. WebVIEW caches the authentication request
from the LDAP server, and as long as the supplied password
matches the cached response, no LDAP challenge will be
required. If security setting are changed or the WebVIEW is
power cycled all users will be checked. Under LDAP no user
passwords are stored in non-volatile memory on the
WebVIEW.
NOTE : LDAP may require additional paid engineering cost to
configure for each customers configuration.

When using Basic or LDAP,WebVIEW logs the name of the user,

while using None, WebVIEW logs GUEST as the user, when
reporting activity into the Logs.

Note: All passwords are sent using standard ”basic

authentication”, between the web browser and theWebVIEW
unit. As such Basic security level is recommended, as non-
corporate passwords can be used, plus the ability to use the
”Users” as groups of people, using a standard name and
password for all in a single group.

1-8 WebVIEW Operation Guide

M-038140
Introduction and Installation

WebVIEW has 4 options when setting up security.

• None (N). This option disables all security.

• Basic (B). This option enables Basic authentication.
• LDAP (L). This option enables LDAP authentication.
• Reset (R). This option clears the WebVIEW user list. But keeps
the current authentication type.
Only LDAP examples are shown as they are the most
complicated to configure. Setting up the users permissions for
Basic and LDAP Authentication will be shown in another
chapter.

Bank Integration with WebVIEW

WebVIEW can be connected to some versions of the WTC’s Bank

system. If the Bank system is being used the bank integration
manager must be enabled. This manager uses port 1152 on
WebVIEW for communications. The protocol used is a propriety
WTC protocol between the Bank system and WebVIEW .

DEP Network Sharing

WebVIEW allows the use of a DEP on the same MedLan Network

that WebVIEW itself uses. If a DEP is not going to be used on the
MedLan Network, WebVIEW can be configured not to look for or
share the network bandwidth with a DEP. The default is to allow
the use of a DEP on the network. It is enabled by default.

NOTE: It is recommended that this option is left enabled. As

when no DEP is detected, WebVIEW will slowly stop checking
until a maximum wait between checks is reached. A result of this
is that when a DEP is connected to a running network, it will take
a while for the WebVIEW to notice and start sharing the network.

30 seconds. Use this area to select the menu for the System or a
weld control. Weld controls are organized by channel. Only
controls that are on-line are displayed. If a control goes off-line,
after a brief time period, the control is dropped from the list. If a
control is brought back on-line, it may take up to five minuets for
WebVIEW to connect and configure itself to the new control. If a
channel has no controls connected, the status indicator turns
black. If the WebVIEW does not have a Channel, the channel
indicator is not shown. (i.e., single-channel WebVIEW units will
show only Channel 0.)
