Boxing

Alex: Good morning everyone, my name is Alejandro and with my teammates luca and Jorge,
today we are going to talk about boxing.

Luca Boxing started over 5,000 years ago in Egypt. Fighters used leather on their hands for
protection. In 688 BC, the Greeks made it a sport in the Olympic Games. The Romans later added
metal gloves, making it more dangerous. Boxing stopped for a time but returned in England in the
1600s, leading to modern boxing.

Alex: In boxing you need to have at least 2 people in your corner who attend to you at the
end of each round. The coach who gives you instructions and motivation and the doctor
who cures you, gives you water, and the one who decides if you can continue or not.
Jorge: Punches in boxing are super important to attack, defend, keep distance, score points, and go
for a knockout.

The main hits used in boxing are the next:

Jab: Is a Straight punch to fase or chest with front hand. Quickly and direct.

Cross: its like the Jab but the punch goes with the back hand.

Hook: Is a Side punch to the head or body. Circular movement.

Uppercut: Up punch to the jaw or body. Move from down to up.

Overhand: Its a Big punch to head from above. Wide and strong

You can also do different combinations of blows, they are usually called by name, for example: jab,
jab, hook. But you can also call them as numbers for example: 1,1,2

Luca: In the 17th century in England, boxing returned in the form of bare-knuckle boxing.
Duels with bets became popular.
Alex: In boxing there is special and very important equipment to fight
Boxing Gloves: There are two different types of boxing gloves of 8 and 10 ounces, which one to use
depends on the type of boxing weight. for Light weights, 8 ounces gloves are used and for Medium
or higher weights, 10 ounces gloves

Hand bandages: they are placed under the gloves, used to protect the knuckles and wrists

Mouthguard: These are personalized for each fighter, he bites a mold that fits his mouth. The
mouthguard serves to protect the teeth and jaw.

Boxing boots: They are designed to have agility and move quickly around the ring.

Luca: In boxing there are different types of categories depending on their weight.
Light weights: from 47 kg to 53 kg

Middle weights: from 55 kg to 61 kg

Heavy weight: from 80 kg to 90 kg

In a fight the two boxers have to be in the same weight category If the fighters do’nt enter their
weight category they have to follow a very strict diet to make weight. There are also more
categories that are of a more specific weight.

If they have to gain weight they have to do a volume diet that consists of eating more calories than
you consume and you have to eat more protein

And if you have to lose weight you have to make a caloric deficit, which consists of eating minus
calories than you consume and you have to eat more protein.

Jorge: In boxing there are áreas in which hitting is allowed and in which it is not, if you make an
ilegal blow you Will be penalized and points Will be taken away.

the allowed areas to hit are:

In the head, including the face, jaw, nose, cheecks.

In the body like The torso, sides, the liver and stomach

In the arms: The upper part of the arms.

And the áreas where you CANNOT hit:

Back of the head, This blow is better known as a rabbit blow, Hitting in the neck or back of the
head, is ilegal and dangerous.

The Back because you cant hit the spine

Below the waist: no hitting in the private area.

The most critical blows you can receive are to the jaw because this blow disorients you and you
can lose your balance and concentration because the blow directly affects the brain.

Alex: The physical preparation for boxing is:

Cardio trainig like running and jump the rope: it helps you not get tired and gain resistance

Strenght training like weights and bodyweight exercise : they serve to hit the blows harder and
gain resistance to dont knock you out

Agility and speed training like bag work and shadow boxing: They are used to practice blows and
fighting techniques

Abdominal Exercises:Working that area is very important because most of the blows go to the
head and abdomen.
Training fights better known as sparring: They are fights using face protection like boxing masks,
the Sparring fights serve to practice how you would fight in a normal fight and correct that you did
wrong.

Luca: In the 20th century boxing became a global sport. Legendary champions such as Muhammad
Ali, Joe Louis and Mike Tyson emerged.

Jorge: In a profesional boxing match the fight usually has 12 rounds and each round lasts 3
minutes, with 1 minute rest between rounds. When the 12 rounds have passed the judges have to
decide who won, it can be by ananimous or divided decision, There is also victory by knockout in
which if you are knocked to the ground the judge starts counting up to 10 if you don't stand up you
lose

Luca:For example, in the unanimous decision the three judges decided that fighter 1 won, and in
the divided decision two judges decided that fighter 1 won and the third judge decided that fighter
2 won.

Alex: There is also another decision, if the three judges decide that there is a tie, a last extra round
is done. This is most common in tournaments or exhibition fights.

Luca: Boxing is one of the best paid sports because boxers like Canelo Alvarez earn between 40 and
50 million dollars per fight.

In Mike Tyson's most recent fight, which was an exhibition event for Netflix, Mike Tyson won 20
million dollars for fighting.

Now we are going to tell you a story about a fighter who ended up ruined by a fight in which his
opponent hit him ilegal blows. Prichard Colon.

Alex: Prichard Colon was a Puerto Rican boxer that starts his carrer at the 20 years old, his talent
turn him to a champion who was destined to become a star, in only three years Prichard fought
and won 16 battles, 13 of which where by knockout, but on October 17, 2015, he fought versus
Terrel Williams in a 10 round fight.

Luca:Since the first round Williams began to hit him behind the neck but the judge did nothing, the
fight continued and Prichard constantly told the judge that Williams was giving him ilegal blows.

Jorge: After several ilegal blows by Williams the judge took away 1 point to him, then the judge
gave 5 minutes for the doctor to check Prichard and he said that Prichard can continue but in the
round number 9 Prichard fell to the ground, he was finally taken to the hospital where he was in a
coma for 200 days for a hemorrhage in the brain but when he woke up Prichard Colón was in a
vegetal state.
