EVENT REPORT

Name of Event : “Data Analysis: Application of

Statistical Tools & Techniques using SPSS Software”
Date of Event : 12th & 13th November, 2024 (Tuesday&
Wednesday)
Time: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
Organized by : School of Management Studies (SOMS),
ITS Engineering College, Greater Noida
Coordinator: Prof. Vindhyachal Nath Tripathi (Assistant
Professor)
Eminent Speaker/Guest : Dr. Rahul Chandra (Professor
& Director, NIFT Kangra)

Objective: The objective of the workshop was to teach data

analysis skills using SPSS, focusing on correlation, regression, and
hypothesis testing. It provided hands-on experience to help
interpret statistical results and apply them in real-world contexts.

Introduction:
The two-day workshop on "Data Analysis Application of Statistical
Tools and SPSS Software" was an insightful and hands-on
experience organized to enhance understanding and practical
skills in statistical analysis. The sessions were led by Dr. Rahul
Chandra, an expert in data analysis and statistical methods, who
guided us through the essentials of SPSS software and key
statistical concepts.

Day 1: Correlation and Regression

1.SPSS Software Introduction:
Dr. Chandra began with an introduction to SPSS software, a
powerful tool for data analysis, enabling researchers to
analyze complex datasets efficiently. He guided us through
the basic functionalities, such as data input, handling
datasets, and performing basic statistical operations. We
learned how SPSS could streamline processes that would
otherwise require time-consuming manual calculations.

2.Correlation Analysis:
The first statistical concept covered was correlation
analysis, a method to measure the relationship
between two variables.

Dr. Chandra introduced,

 Karl Pearson’s Correlation (or Pearson’s r): A
measure of linear correlation between two continuous
variables.

 Spearman's Rank Correlation: A non-parametric

measure used when data doesn't meet the assumptions
required for Pearson’s correlation, especially when data
is ordinal or non-linear.
We were taught the assumptions, calculations, and interpretation
of correlation coefficients, as well as their application in real-world
data analysis scenarios. The professor demonstrated how to
perform both Pearson’s and Spearman’s correlation tests using
SPSS.

3.Regression Analysis:
The session then moved to regression analysis, another
critical tool for understanding relationships between
variables:

 Simple Linear Regression: Understanding how one

independent variable can predict a dependent variable.

 Regression Equation: We learned to formulate a

regression equation, calculate coefficients, and
interpret the results.
Dr. Chandra emphasized the importance of interpreting the
coefficient of determination (R-squared value) and discussed its
role in measuring the strength of prediction. Practical
demonstrations in SPSS allowed participants to apply this
knowledge and understand the regression output.
Day 2: Hypothesis Testing and Other Statistical
Tests

1.Hypothesis Testing:
Null and Alternative Hypothesis Day two began with an
introduction to hypothesis testing, covering:
 Null Hypothesis (H0): The assumption that there is
no effect or no difference.
 Alternative Hypothesis (H1): The assumption that
there is an effect or a difference.
Dr. Chandra explained the steps involved in hypothesis testing,
including setting significance levels, calculating test statistics,
and making conclusions based on p-values. He also emphasized
the importance of sample size and statistical power in hypothesis
testing.

2.T-test and Z-test:

The next topic was T-tests and Z-tests, which are used to
compare sample means:
 T-test: Applicable when sample sizes are small, or
population variance is unknown.
 Z-test: Used for larger samples with known population
variance.
 One-Tailed and Two-Tailed Tests: We learned the
difference between one-tailed and two-tailed tests, and
when to apply each based on the research question. Dr.
Chandra provided examples to clarify the interpretation
of each type of test in SPSS.
3. Normal Distribution and Standard Deviation:
Dr. Chandra then covered the normal distribution and the
importance of the normal curve in statistical analysis. He
explained:
 Characteristics of a normal distribution
 The role of standard deviation in measuring data spread
around the mean
We learned how to plot a normal curve and interpret the spread of
data, understanding that many statistical tests assume data
follows a normal distribution.

Conclusion :
The workshop was highly educational, with practical applications
and exercises in SPSS software that solidified our understanding
of statistical concepts. Dr. Rahul Chandra’s explanations and SPSS
demonstrations offered us a thorough grounding in data analysis
techniques applicable across various fields. This hands-on
approach gave participants the skills necessary to analyze data
accurately and interpret results effectively.
Program Outcome: Students got in-depth knowledge
about the Use of Project Management In daily life.
