Honorable Chair, esteemed delegates, and distinguished
guests,
Thank you for the opportunity to address these vital issues
on behalf of Nigeria. Health and education are
cornerstones of a nation's prosperity, and for Nigeria a
country with a vast and youthful population-they are
especially crucial. In alignment with UNICEF's mission,
Nigeria is committed to strengthening access to healthcare
and education for every child, working towards the United
Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3 and 4.
Today, I will outline both the progress made and the
challenges we face in health and education, and how
UNICEF's support can help us overcome these obstacles.
Health Initiatives and Challenges (SDG 3)
Nigeria's healthcare system, though advancing, continues
to face significant challenges, particularly in child health.
Vaccines are a critical component of our health strategy.
UNICEF's ongoing efforts to provide vaccines in Nigeria
protect children from life-threatening diseases like
measles and polio. In recent years, Nigeria has made
strides in reducing polio cases, yet reaching rural and
underserved communities remains challenging due to
infrastructure and logistical constraints. UNICEF's support
in expanding vaccination campaigns and enhancing cold
storage capabilities has been invaluable, but more
targeted efforts are needed to reach all regions, especially
conflict-prone areas in northeast.
Malnutrition is another pressing concern, affecting millions
of Nigerian children. A lack of access to nutritious food
stunts growth, weakens immune systems, and hinders
cognitive development. UNICEF's nutrition programs,
which provide essential food supplements and educate
families on nutrition, are helping to address this crisis.
However, addressing hunger requires comprehensive,
long-term solutions, including sustainable agricultural
practices, food security programs, and increased support
for families in poverty.
Finally, access to clean water is crucial for maintaining
children's health. Many communities in Nigeria still lack
clean water, leading to waterborne diseases that
particularly impact children. UNICEF's initiatives to
improve water access, build wells, and promote sanitation
are essential steps in reducing child mortality. Nigeria
welcomes continued assistance from UNICEF in these
areas to ensure every child can grow up in a healthy,
supportive environment.
