Exercise 1 – Introduction to AutoCAD and Geometric Construction

Objective:
1. To familiar with AutoCAD layout.
2. To apply Draw and Modify toolbox in AutoCAD

To create a new drawing using Template


1. Create a new drawing using a template;

2. Select the template.


3. Set UNITS. Types Units in command bar. Choose ‘millimeters’ with 2 decimal points.
4. Set your drawing LIMITS as a A4 size (297,210). Type LIMITS in command bar;
LIMITS Specify lower left corner or [ON OFF] <0.00,0.00>: 0,0 

LIMITS Specify upper left corner or [ON OFF] <x.xx,y.yy>: 297,210 

1. Drawing Rectangle
Command: RECTANGLE
Specify first corner: Type 0,0  (or anywhere on the screen)
Specify other corner point: 70, 60  (using Dynamic Input)

2. Drawing Circles
Command: CIRCLE
Specify center point for circle: Click the MIDPOINT of the line to
specify the centerpoint
* Make sure you ON the Midpoint in Object Snap Setting
Specify radius of circle: 35 

Press ENTER to repeat the circle command for R20.


Repeat the steps above.

3. Explode the rectangle to be an individual entity.


Command: EXPLODE
Select objects: Select the rectangle 
4. Offset the lines
Command: OFFSET
Select objects: Select the respective line 
Specify the distance: 15 
Select the side: Point the cursor in the direction you want to offset
the object

Press ENTER to repeat the offset command.


Repeat the above steps by specify the distance and select the side
to place the offset line for other lines.
5. Trim the lines
Command: TRIM
Select objects: Select the extended lines and curve to be trimmed

1. Draw 3 circles, 80, 64 and 42 using the same centerpoint.
*ON the Center in Object Snap Setting

2. Draw Shape
Command: POLYLINE/ LINE
Start point: Select centerpoints of 64 circle 
End point: Move the cursor and click at any point extend from 64
circle perimeter 
Command: OFFSET
Select objects: Select the respective line 
Specify the distance: 4 
Select the side: Point the cursor in the direction you want to offset
the object, select above
Repeat the steps to offset the line at below

Command: TRIM and ERASE


Select objects: Select any unnecessary lines

Command: JOIN
Select objects: Select all lines to form the respective shape 

3. Form the Array


Command: POLAR ARRAY
Select objects: Select the respective shape 
Specify center points of array: Select the circle centerpoint 
Array Creation: Set the array properties; Items, Rows etc
Close Array or 

4. To draw entity from other base point


- Draw a 22 circle.
Command: CIRCLE.
Specify center point for circle: Right click the mouse button.
Choose Oversnap Override < From

Specify center point for circle:_from base point: Select the


centerpoint of 42 circle

Specify center point for circle:_from base point:<offset>: Type the


relative coordinate of the new circle centerpoint from the base
point @-53, -40
Specify radius of circle: Type in the radius for 42.

Draw 22 circle at same centerpoint.

5. Repeat step 4 to draw 16 and R16 circles with a relative


coordinate of @-40,-78 from the base point.

6. To draw line tangent to circles.


*ON the Tangent in Object Snap Setting
Command: LINE
Specify first point: Pick the 1st point of the line on slightly above
the 80 circle perimeter.
Specify second point: Pick the 2nd point of the line on slightly below
the 42 circle perimeter.

7. Repeat step 6 for the line tangent between 42 and R16.

9. Mirror the entity


Command: MIRROR
Select Objects: Select all entities to be mirrored to the other side
.
Specify the 1st point of the mirror line: Select one middle point,
choose Center point of 42.
Specify the 2nd point of the mirror line: Move the mouse cursor
downwards, creating a vertical line, and click anywhere.
Erase source objects? : No

10. Draw an arc


Command: ARC -> START, END, RADIUS
Specify start point of arc: Click at the quadrant* of the R16 at the
right side
Specify end point of arc: Click at the quadrant of the R16 at the
left side
Specify radius of arc: 24

*ON the Quadrant in Object Snap Setting
