Arthur gróf megint nagy úr, de már nem pazarol. Két ezer forint
édes anyjától, négy ezer forint ama rejtélyes forrásból elég volt neki,
hogy bizonytalan határideig folytathassa megszokott életmódját.
Azonban alig elmult és el nem feledett szorultsága megtanította őt
gazdálkodni. Költött, de nem szórá pénzét, mint azelőtt.
Bendeffy Károlyné nem hitt a tündéri mesékben, de a szeme elé
tett váltók, fiának gömbölyű pénztárczája hangos ékesszólással
beszéltek. Ezen napon édes anyjánál ebédelt és elbeszélte neki,
hogy Porczogh báró előnyös kölcsönt szerzett számára, hogy nagy
kamatról szó sincs, sőt még a tőke visszafizetésének határideje
sincs kikötve.
– Ezt csak olyan hitelező tette, – vélekedék a grófné, – a ki
bizonyosan tudja, hogy esküvőd Esztikével, annak idejében, el nem
maradhat.
– Én sem gondolhatok egyebet.
Ebéd után felment a második emeletbe. Oda hozatta fekete
kávéját, szivarra gyújtott s várta Porczogh báró látogatását.
A báró pedig mindig pontos volt, s a szokott órában
bekopogtatott.
– Arthur, – mondá, miután kényelmesen elhelyezkedett. – A
józan ész tanácsolja, hogy akkor tegyünk valamit, a midőn lelkünk
nyugodt, midőn hitelezőnk nem háborgat, s egy kis pénz birtokában
szabadon rendelkezhetünk időnkkel. Gondold meg, minő állapotban
voltál nehány nappal ezelőtt, a mikor Párisba készültél menekülni?
– Párisba? Oh azt csak egyik állomásnak tekintettem, mert meg
sem állok Amerikáig. Beállok ott munkásnak, hordom targonczával a
földet a frissen hányt vasuti töltésre.
– Jeles elhatározás, melyet előtted mások is megkisérlettek. De
midőn a földet a harmadik targonczával borították a töltésre, tele volt
hólyaggal a tenyerük. Akkor aztán azt gondolták, ha nem lehet valaki
gróf Európában, legokosabban teszi, ha a Missisippi habjai között
keresi fel a dolgok végét.
– Nagyon valószinű, hogy épen így járok.
– Miután pedig okos ember ezen eshetőséget legutoljára hagyja,
tanácskozzunk kissé állapotodról. A legelső kérdés, minő
melegséggel fogadja menyasszonyod udvarlásodat?
– Még mindig az elismert, a kétségbe nem vont vőlegény vagyok
előtte és érdeklődéssel hallja, ha jövendőbeli háztartásunkról
beszélek. Néha megjegyzem, mennyit mulasztunk el az esküvő
elhalasztása által, mert épen a téli időben van együtt a társaság és
ez volna a legkedvezőbb alkalom őt mindenütt bemutatni, úgy
hogyha nyárra falura megyünk, akkor már ismeretséget kötött az
egész magyar arisztokracziával.
– És tetszik neki e fényes kilátás?
– Mondhatom, ebben fekszik legfőbb erőm; e nélkül tán értékem
se volna előtte.
– Túlságos szerénység, barátom. De mért nem beszélsz vele
arról, a mit minden leány legörömestebb hall, a szerelemről?
