36. Case study 1:

Read the following passage and answer the questions given below.

A man wants to make an open water tank on the roof of his building. Keeping the
requirement in mind he decided the volume should be 8m3 and the tank should
have a rectangular base and rectangular sides. Keeping the restriction of height of
the building the depth of the tank is decided to be 2m. The contractor given the
estimate of making the water tank as Rs70 per square metre to build the base and
Rs 45 per square metre for the sides .

Based on this situation answer the following question:

(i) If the length is x m and breadth is y m, then express the surface area A in
terms of x only.
(ii) Write the cost function C for making the tank in terms of x only.
(iii) Use first derivative test to find the value of x which minimise the cost of
making the tank.
OR
Use second derivative test to find the value of x which minimise the cost
of making the tank.

37. Case study 2

The relation between the height of the plant (y in cm) with respect to exposure to
sunlight is governed by the following equation – , where is the
number of days exposed to sunlight .

(i)
Find the rate of growth of plant with respect to the number of days
exposed to sunlight.
(ii) Find height of the plant after two days.
(iii) Find the maximum height of the plant.
OR
If height of the plant is 3.5 cm. , then find the number of days the plant
has been exposed to sunlight.
38. Case study 3 :

In a test an examinee either guesses or copies or knows the answer to a

multiple question with four choices. The probability that he makes a guess is
1/3 and the probability that he copies the answer is 1/6. The probability that
his answer is correct, given that he copied it , is 1/8.
Let E1, E2, E3 be the events that the examinee guesses the answer, copies the
answer and knows the answer respectively and A is the event that the examinee
answers correctly .

Based on the above information answer the following questions:

(i) Find the probability that the examinee answer the questions correctly.
(ii) If the answer of the question is correct , find the probability that the
examinee knows the answer.
