BCHE205L: Momentum Transfer
Digital Assignment
1. For the inclined-tube manometer the pressure in pipe A is 0.6 psi. The fluid in both
pipes A and B is water, and the gage fluid in the manometer has a specific gravity of
2.6. What is the pressure in pipe B corresponding to the differential reading shown?
2. A velocity field is specified as V = axy i + by2 j, where a= 2m−1s−1, b= −6m−1s−1, and
the coordinates are measured in meters. Is the flow field one-, two-, or three-
dimensional? Why? Calculate the velocity components at the point (2, ½). Develop an
equation for the streamline passing through this point.
3. In the incompressible flow through the device shown, velocities may be considered
uniform over the inlet and outlet sections. The following conditions are known: A1 =
0.1m2, A2 = 0.2m2, A3 = 0.6m2, V1 = 10e−t/2 m/s, and V2 = 2cos(2πt) m/s (t in
seconds). Obtain an expression for the velocity at section (3), and plot V3 as a
function of time. At what instant does V3 first become zero? What is the total mean
volumetric flow at section (3)?
4. Consider the flow field given by V = ax2y I – by j + cz2 k, where a = 2m−2s−1, b=2 s−1,
and c = 1 m−1s−1. Determine (a) the number of dimensions of the flow, (b) if it is a
possible incompressible flow, and (c) the acceleration of a fluid particle at point
(x,y,z) = (2,1,3).
5. Water flows from a very large tank through a 5 cm diameter tube. The dark liquid in
the manometer is mercury. Estimate the velocity in the pipe and the rate of discharge
from the tank. Assume the flow is frictionless.
6. At very low speeds, the drag on an object is independent of fluid density. Thus the
drag force, F, on a small sphere is a function only of speed, V, fluid viscosity, μ, and
sphere diameter, D. Use dimensional analysis to determine how the drag force F
depends on the speed V.
7. You are asked to find a set of dimensionless parameters to organize data from a
laboratory experiment, in which a tank is drained through an orifice from initial liquid
level h. The time, τ, to drain the tank depends on tank diameter, D, orifice diameter, d,
acceleration of gravity, g, liquid density, ρ, and liquid viscosity, μ. How many
dimensionless parameters will result? How many repeating variables must be selected
to determine the dimensionless parameters? Obtain the Π parameter that contains the
viscosity.
8. The pipe of 400 mm diameter and 2 km long is connected to a reservoir at one end.
The other end of the pipe is connected to junction from which two pipes each of
length 1 km and diameter 300 mm run parallel. These parallel pipes are connected to
another reservoir, which is having level of water 10 m below the water level of the
above reservoir. Determine the total discharge if the friction factor is 0.06. Neglect
minor losses.
9. A packed bed of spherical particles (dp = 50 μm, ρs = 400 kg/m3) is fluidized using air
at 870 °C and pressure = 2.76 × 104 N/m2. The packed-bed density is 1440 kg/m3 and
superficial air velocity is 0.3 m/s. Compare the values of pressure drop from Ergun’s
equation and fluidized bed condition – equation. μair = 1.28 kg/m.s.
10. Determine the velocity profile and shear stress profile equations for a flow through
pipe using differential control volume analysis.
