Biology A Study Guide

Unit 3: Human Body Systems
Objective 1: Differentiate between Systems, Organs, Tissues, and Cells
State Standard: LS1-HS-2: A: Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting systems
that provide specific functions within multicellular organisms.

Students should be able to:

1) Identify the function and role of each of the 11 body systems.

2) Explain what body systems, body organ, body tissue, and body cells are composed of.

How to study:
a) Read Body System Notes
b) Define the following vocabulary terms:

-Body System:

-Organ:

-Tissue:

-Cell:

- The role of the skeletal system:

-The role of the muscular System:

-The role of the circulatory system:

-The role of the digestive system:

-The role of the nervous System:

-The role of the immune System:

-The role of the pulmonary system:

-The role of the reproductive system:

-The role of the endocrine system:

-The role of the integumentary system:

-The role of the excretory system:

Objective 2: Identify the organs which are found in 5 body systems
State Standard: LS1-HS-2: A: Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting systems
that provide specific functions within multicellular organisms.

Students should be able to:

1) Identify the common organs in each body system and the function of each organ.

How to study:
a) Read Body System notes for each system.
b) Define the following organ vocabulary terms:

Skeletal System:

Muscular System:

Circulatory System:
-Heart:

-Blood (5 liters):

-Lungs:

-Blood Vessels (arteries, veins, capillaries):

Digestive System:
-Mouth:

-Salivary glands:

-Teeth:

-Tongue:

-Nose (Olfactory sense):

-Skin:

Objective 3: Identify the tissues which are found in each body system
State Standard: LS1-HS-2: A: Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting systems
that provide specific functions within multicellular organisms.

Students should be able to:

1) Identify and describe the function of the common tissues in each body system

How to study:
a) Read: Body System Notes
b) Define the following tissue vocabulary terms:

Skeletal System:
-Cartilage:

-Red Marrow:

-Spongy Bone Tissue:

-Compact Bone Tissue:

-Ligaments:

-Tendons:

Muscular System:
Skeletal Muscle:

Nervous System:
-Nervous tissue:

Objective 4: Identify the types of cells which are found in each body system
State Standard: LS1-HS-2: A: Develop and use a model to illustrate the hierarchical organization of interacting systems
that provide specific functions within multicellular organisms.

Students should be able to:

1) Identify and describe the function of the common cells in each body system

How to study:
a) Read Body System Notes
b) Define the following cell vocabulary terms:

Skeletal System:
-Erythrocytes (Red Blood Cells):

-Leukocytes (White Blood Cells):

-Osteocytes (Mature bone cells):

-Skeletal Muscle Cells:

-Smooth Muscle Cells:

-Cardiac Muscle Cells:

Objective 5: Differentiate the positive and negative feedback mechanism to maintain

homeostasis
State Standard: LS1-HS-3: A. Plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence that feedback mechanisms maintain
homeostasis.

Students should be able to:

1) Explain how a positive feedback mechanism functions

2) Explain how a negative feedback mechanism functions

3) Identify examples of positive and negative feedback functions in the body

How to study:
a) Read Body Systems Notes
b) Define the following vocabulary terms:

-Positive Feedback:

-Negative Feedback:

Objective 6: Explain how cells, tissues, organs, and body systems are all used together
to meet the needs of the whole organism.
State Standard: LS1-HS-4. Use a model to illustrate the role of cellular division (mitosis) and differentiation in producing
and maintaining complex organisms.

Students should be able to:

1) Explain how the body uses cells, tissues, organs, and body systems to meet the needs of the whole organism.

2) Describe how the various systems work together to complete a task

3) Understand that the body works together to function correctly. If one system is not functioning correctly, it can affect
other systems.

How to study:
a) Read Body Systems Notes
b) Answer the following questions:
-How do the skeletal and muscular system work together?

-How does the immune system and the respiratory system work together?

-How does the reproductive system and the endocrine system work together?

-How does the digestive system and the circulatory system work together?

-How does the nervous system and the muscular system work together?

Ultimately, pick 2 body systems and ask how they work together. Can you do this?
How do the systems affect each other? Can a broken bone affect the muscles attached to it? Can damage to a nervous
system affect how muscles work? Etc.
