E Reading
Borneo
Borneo is the third largest island in the world. Borneo is home to one of the oldest rainforests in the world. There
are rivers, caves, mountains and much more. Mount Kinabalu is 4,095 m tall and is the highest point on the island.
The Gomantong Caves are another interesting place to visit.
The most popular destination for animal lovers in Borneo is Sepilok Orangutan Centre in the Kabili rainforest. The
centre opened in 1964 to help young orangutans. The best time for tourists to visit is at 10.00 a.m. or 3.00 p.m.
because some of the orangutans come to the centre to eat fruit at these times. You can’t always see an orangutan,
though. The centre prepares the orangutans to live in the forest without help from people. One of the most important
skills the young orangutans learn is how to climb. You can often see them practise on ropes and trees at the centre.
Sometimes, there is other wildlife at the centre, too, such as the Bornean Pygmy elephant. These elephants are in
danger because people are chopping down trees in the forests where they live.
There are lots of other exciting things to do in Borneo. Jungle walks are one of the most popular activities, but there
is also biking and kayaking. You can also go scuba diving and see the beautiful coral reefs. After all this, you can
relax on some of Borneo’s many amazing beaches. The food in Borneo is delicious. There are fantastic restaurants
where you can eat traditional spicy dishes.
