and style

Name situations when formal, informal,

language register
Language Registers
Register in language refers to the conveyed
formality of speech as determined by the social
context of an exchange.
It is conveyed by a speaker who adapts their
language to illustrate to their audience how formal
the exchange is based o their relation.
Language Registers
Any type of spoken or written communication uses
a language register because register is a type of
linguistic variation.
Therefore, linguistic register, can be defined as the
type of linguistic variation that indicates level of
formality and speaker-audience relationship.
Types of Language Register

1. Frozen Register

It refers to historic language that is intended to

remain unchanged. Examples are the register used
in the Philippine Constitution and the Holy Bible
Frozen Register
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was
with God, and the Word was God. The same was in
the beginning with God. All things were made by him;
and without him was not anything made that was
made. In him was life; and the life was the light of
men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the
darkness comprehended it not. John 1:1-5 King
James Version

2. Formal Register

These registers are used in professional, academic,

or legal settings where communication is expected
to be respectful.
Formal Register
The Philippine K-12 Curriculum and
accreditation agencies mandate schools to shift
from teacher-centered to learner-centered
instructional practices aimed at "making the
curriculum relevant to the learners and "nurturing
the holistically developed Filipino."
In its fourth year of nationwide implementation, it is plausible to
investigate whether the curriculum developers' expectations of learner-
centered pedagogies in the larger scale are implemented in the classrooms.
Direct studies provide crucial insights into the applicability of learner-centered
curriculum in the Philippine school setting.
This paper seeks to explore the perceptions and instructional practices
of Filipino teachers on learner-centered pedagogy. English and Filipino
language teachers were interviewed about their personal description and
definitions of learner-centered pedagogy. Their instructional practices were
also verified through close reading and analysis of the curriculum and
instructional plans. Themes like creative teaching strategies, innovative
practices, differentiated instruction and multimedia technology integration
emerged in the analysis. Teachers put premium on learning experiences that
provide students opportunities to use the target languages and foster greater
learner autonomy.

3. Consultative Register

Used in conversations with someone who has

specialized knowledge or is offering advice; tone is
often respectful, such as the use of honorifics.
Consultative Register
A: Good morning Sir!
B: Good Morning! "I'm really excited to be working with you. This is
great. I'm really excited to get to know you, and to work even more
closely with you. Let me tell you a bit about kind of why I'm here. I'm
here to help us achieve X number of goals (whatever those things
are), and to make sure that we deliver extraordinary service, quality,
etc. to our customers. I'm really looking forward to your ideas on how
we can achieve those two goals. I'm also interested, while we're
talking, to hear what your goals are. Given everything I've just said,
let me ask you, what are your goals for this next year?"
