Assignment No. 1 Due on 27//2024 @ 1:15pm (hand written)

1. Figure 1 shows a single-phase full converter. With relevant waveforms, explain the
effects of source inductance Ls and derive the expression for output average voltage with
influence of the source inductance. (10 Marks)

2. For the single phase fully controlled bridge is connected to RLE load. The source voltage
is 230 V, 50 Hz. The average load current of 10A continuous over the working range. For
R= 0.4 Ω and L = 2mH, Compute (10 Marks)
a. firing angle for E = 120V
b. firing angle for E = -120V
c. in case output current is constant find the input power factors for both parts (a)
and (b)

3. A three-phase half wave converter is operated from 3–phase, 230 V, 50Hz supply with
load resistance R= 10 Ω. An average output voltage of 50% of the maximum possible
output voltage is required. Determine (10 Marks)
a. The firing angle
b. Average and rms values of load current.
4. A single-phase full wave ac voltage controller supplies an RL load. The input supply
voltage is 230V, rms at 50Hz. The load has L = 10mH, R = 10Ω, the delay angle of SCR
1 and 2 are equal, where α1= α2=π/3
Determine (10 Marks)
a. Conduction angle of the thyristor.
b. RMS output voltage.
c. The input power factor.
Comment on the type of operation.

5. A 220V, 1500rpm, 10A separately-excited DC motor has an armature resistance of 1Ω. It

is fed from a single-phase fully-controlled bridge rectifier with an AC source voltage of
230 V, 50 Hz. Assuming continuous load current, compute: (10 Marks)
i. Motor speed at the firing angle of 30° and torque of 5Nm
ii. Developed torque at the firing angle of 45° and speed of 1000 rpm.
