Conducting a Simple Science Investigation

I. Learning Competency with Code

Apply the steps in the scientific method in conducting a simple


science investigation (SSP_RS7-SM-IV-s-u-22).

II. Background Information for Learners

Scientists study the world and learn about how it works through a
process called the scientific method. They ask important questions and
search for the answers. Sometimes they make amazing discoveries!
There are times when a scientist is unable to answer his own question.
If he has taken good notes, another scientist may come along later and
use his notes to find the answer. Every now and then there is a new
knowledge discovered.

Scientific investigation is said to be the heart of science. It is how


scientists do or plan out research. It begins with a question or problem.
More often this question or problem arises because of curiosity about
something being observed or discovered. People often have questions
about things they see, hear, or observe in other ways.

Have you ever tried probing on the things that arouse your
curiosity? Did you discover something? In your previous lesson, you
have learned about the steps in scientific method, did you apply the
steps? How did you solve the problem? Now that you are ready, it’s time
for you to know more about conducting scientific investigation by doing
the activity that follows.

III. Activity Proper

Activity 1: Who did it right?

Directions: Read and understand the scenarios below. Answer the guide
questions that follow. Write the answer in your answer sheet.
Liza and Lea were tasked by their research teacher to find out if okra
seeds will sprout in the absence or in the presence of sunlight. They
were given 10-days to observe the growth of Okra seeds and make
results out of their investigation. Find out if Liza and Lea followed and
applied the correct steps of scientific method in conducting scientific
investigations.

Liza’s Investigation

Liza collected two pots and put same amount of humus soil on it. She
labelled the pot as Pot A and Pot B. She planted 10-okra seeds on each
pot with approximate interval. She covered the Pot A with black cloth in
order not to expose the pot under the sun and let Pot B uncovered. She
placed the pots on their backyard, and she watered the pots regularly.
Below were the results of her investigation.

seeds.

Lea’s Investigation

Activity 2: What Should I Do?


Directions: Read the scenario below and answer the questions
that follow.

Bill decided to get a pet. He wanted to know whether a cat or


dog would be a better pet for him. Bill read several books on
dogs and cats to learn more about them. He decided that perhaps
a dog would be a better pet for him. He called a friend who had a
cat and a dog. He asked if he could borrow each of the pets for a
week. During week 1, Bill borrowed the cat, during week 2, he
borrowed the dog. At the end of second week, Bill made a list of
the pros and cons of having each type of pet. When he examined
the lists, he decided that a dog was the pet for him.

Activity 3: I can do it!

Directions: Observe and identify a problem at home or in your


community. Design and conduct simple science investigation to
address the chosen problem. As you go along with the science
investigation, be able to provide the needed information found in
the table below.

Note: Observe precautionary measure in handling tools and


materials needed for the investigation. Make sure to seek
guidance from your parents/guardian in doing the activity. If the
tools are not available, you can innovate and find a replacement
found in your home or you may borrow from your
science/research teacher.
