Sheet 6
(1) A platinum resistance thermometer is used at room temperature. Assuming a linear
temperature variation with resistance, calculate the sensitivity of the thermometer in
ohms per degrees.
(2) An iron-constantan thermocouple is connected to a potentiometer whose terminals are
at 25◦C. The potentiometer reading is 3.59 mV. What is the temperature of the
thermocouple junction?
(3) A thermopile consisting of five junction pairs of Chromel-constantan is used to measure
a temperature difference of 50◦C with the cold junctions at 25◦C. Determine the voltage
output of the thermopile. Suppose the cold-junction temperature is incorrectly stated as
75◦C (in reality, the hot-junction temperature). What error in temperature-difference
measurement would result from this incorrect statement?

(4) The flow rate of methanol at 20°C (𝜌 = 788.4 kg/m3 and 𝜇

= 5.857 ×10−4kg/m·s)through a 4-cm-diameter pipe is to
be measured with a 3 cm-diameter orifice meter equipped
with a mercury manometer across the orifice plate, as
shown. If the differential height of the manometer is 11
cm, determine the flow rate of methanol through the pipe
and the average flow velocity. (take the coefficient of
discharge is 0.61)

(5) Ethanol of density = 786 kg/m3 at 20°C flows down

through a modern venturi meter as shown in following in
Figure. If the mercury manometer reading is 10.16 cm, as
shown, estimate the flow rate, in m3 /s. Density of
mercury = 13600 kg/m3 , venturi meter discharge
coefficient Cd = 0.98.
(6) Show that the velocity in the annular space of a rotameter is not a function of the
measured flow rate. In addition, show that the mass flow rate measured by a rotameter
is a function of the float height.
(7) A rotameter is designed to measure a maximum flow rate of 35 lit/min. of water. The
float has 25.2 mm diameter, a total volume of 15 cm3 and a frontal area of 20 cm2. The
float is constructed so that its density is double that of water. The total tube taper angle
is 2 degree and the diameter of the rotameter tube at inlet is 25 mm. Determine the
total length of the rotameter tube if the drag coefficient is 0.08. Assume a linear relation
between the annulus area of the rotameter and the float height. Also, determine the
meter constant.
