LESSON 1.5: QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS


Finding Quadratic Functions that Model Data and Graphs

LESSON OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students shall be able to:
a) Apply system of equations in identifying equations given a table of values
b) Find the equation of a quadratic function given the vertex and the roots of f (x)=0.

In the previous lesson, you have learned how to make a table of values of a given function
and graph it. In this section, you will determine the function given the table of values or a graph.
Moreover, in order to find the quadratic function given the table of values, graphs, and
zeroes you will use a system of equations (which have already discuss during Grade 8). To do
this, you will need at least three points on the graph of the function. Let us look at the following
examples.

Determine the quadratic function given the table of values, graph or zeroes.

A. GIVEN A TABLE OF VALUES


Example #1

To solve for the equation of the quadratic function, let us follow the following steps:

To determine the equation of a quadratic function based on its graph, let us use the vertex form of the
quadratic function.
Let us find the equation of the quadratic function whose graph is shown below.

C. GIVEN THE ZEROES OF THE FUNCTION


You have learned that one of the forms of a quadratic function is the factored form. You can
use this form to find the equation given the zeroes of the function.

Let us find the equation of the quadratic function with zeroes −3∧1. Use the form
f (x)=(x −n)( x − m), where n and m are zeroes.
STEPS DEMONSTRATION
1. Substitute the zeroes in the form f (x)=(x −n)(x − m)
f (x)=(x −n)(x − m) f (x)=¿

Example #7
Let us find the equation of a quadratic function with zeroes 2∧1 , and the parabola passes
through (0, 4). Use the form f (x)=a(x −n)(x −m),where n∧m are the zeroes.

STEPS DEMONSTRATION
4. Substitute the zeroes in the form f (x)=a(x −n)(x −m)
f (x)=a(x −n)(x −m) f (x)=a(x −2)(x − 1)
5. To find a, substitute x and y of the given point f (x)=a(x −2)(x − 1)
to the equation obtained from step 1. Note 4=a(0 − 2)(0 − 1)
