Solute, Solvent, and Solution: The Basics of Mixtures

Introduction to Solutions

● A solution is a special type of mixture

● One substance dissolves into another
● It's uniform throughout (homogeneous)
● Can you think of any solutions you use
daily?
Characteristics of Solutions

● Uniform or homogeneous
● Doesn't change over time or settle
● Doesn't scatter light
● Particles are too small to filter out
● What do you think makes solutions different from other
mixtures?
Examples of Solutions

● Sugar in water
● Salt in water
● Soda water
● Can you name any other solutions you've
seen?
Parts of a Solution: Solute

● Solute: the substance being dissolved

● Usually the smaller amount in the solution
● Example: salt in salt water
● What do you think would be the solute in sweet tea?
Parts of a Solution:
Solvent

● Solvent: the substance that does the

dissolving
● Usually the larger amount in the solution
● Example: water in salt water
● Can you guess what the most common
solvent is?
The Process of Dissolving

● Solute breaks up from larger crystal

● Becomes smaller groups or individual molecules
● Solvent molecules surround solute particles
● How do you think temperature affects dissolving?
Solubility

● Measures how much solute can dissolve in

a solvent
● Typically measured per liter of solvent
● Saturated solution: can't dissolve any more
solute
● Why do you think some substances are
more soluble than others?
Concentration

● Proportion of solute to solvent

● Concentrated: lots of solute
● Diluted: little solute
● How could you make a diluted solution more concentrated?
Miscible Liquids

● Miscible: liquids that can mix to form a

solution
● Example: water and ethanol
● Can mix in any proportion
● Can you think of other liquids that might be
miscible?
Immiscible Liquids

● Immiscible: liquids that don't mix to form a solution

● Example: oil and water
● Form separate layers
● What happens when you shake immiscible liquids? Why?
Applications of Solutions

● Beverages (juices, sodas)

● Cleaning products
● Medicines
● Can you list some solutions you use at
home or school?
Review Questions

● What are the two parts of a solution?

● How is a concentrated solution different from a diluted one?
● What's the difference between miscible and immiscible liquids?
● Can you explain why some substances dissolve in water and
others don't?
