NO two
individuals
are EXACTLY
the same.
1

What is
Diversity?
From the Latin word "divertere"
• to turn away
• separate
• oppose
"the state or quality of being different or varied; a
variety or assortment; a point of difference; the
inclusion of people of different races, genders,
religions, etc. in a group; the relation that holds
between two entities when and only when they are not
identical; the property of being numerically distinct."
Collins Dictionary

Factors That
Bring About
Student
Diversity
Socioeconomic
Status
The millionaires' lifestyle
differs from that of the
middle income or lower
income group.
Thinking/Learning
Style
Some of you learn better by
seeing something; others by
just listening; and still others
by manipulating something.
Exceptionalities
In class, there may be one
who has difficulty in spoken
language comprehension or
in seeing, hearing, etc.

How Student
Diversity
Enriches the
Learning
Environment
01
Students' self-awareness is enhanced by diversity.
02
Student diversity contributes to cognitive development.
The classroom is peculiarly the marketplace of ideas.
The depth and breadth of student learning are
enhanced by exposure to others from diverse
backgrounds. Students diversity in the classroom
brings about different points of view and varied
approaches to the learning process.

William J. Brennan, Supreme Court Justice

03
Student diversity prepares learners for their role as
responsible members of society.
04
Student diversity can promote harmony.

Some Tips on
Student
Diversity
01 Encourage learners to share their personal
history and experiences.

02 Integrate learning experiences and activities that

promote students' multicultural and cross-
cultural awareness.

03 Aside from highlighting diversity, identify

patterns of unity that transcend group
differences.
Every human is, at the same time,
like all other humans, like some
humans, and like no other human.
We are all same in different ways.
04 Communicate high expectations to students
from all subgroups.

05 Use varied instructional methods to

accommodate student diversity in learning
styles.

06 Vary the examples you use to illustrate

concepts in order to provide multiple contexts
that are relevant to students from diverse
backgrounds.
07 Adapt to the students' diverse backgrounds
and learning styles by allowing them personal
choice and decision-making opportunities
concerning what they will learn and how they
will learn it.

08 Diversify your methods of assessing and

revaluating student learning.
09 Purposely, form small-discussion groups of
students from diverse backgrounds. You can
form groups of students with different
learning style, different cultural background.
The concept of diversity
encompasses acceptance and
respect. It means understanding
that each individual is unique, and
recognizing our individual.
If you can't ACCEPT,
at least RESPECT.
