 It is a tool because it can help

you solve the immediate
problem or to achieve a goal.
 It is a type of skill because once
you learnt you can use it
repeatedly.
 It is also a process because it
involves taking a number of
steps.

According to Skinner,
“Problem solving is the process of
overcoming difficulties that hinder
the achievement of a goal.”
According to John Dewey,
"Problem solving is woven into the
fabric of logical thinking. The
problem determines the goal and the
goal controls the thinking process."

by making a conjecture from repeated
observations.

 Deductive approach- The deductive

approach to problem solving is a logical,
unbiased way to solve problems by testing
a hypothesis against facts.

 Analytic approach- An analytical

approach to problem solving is a method
that breaks down a complex problem into
smaller, more manageable parts to find a
solution. It's a skill that can help you
tackle challenges, generate innovative
solutions, and improve your performance
in any field.

problem-solving is identifying the problem
that needs to be solved. Teachers can present
students with a real-world problem or
challenge that requires critical thinking and
collaboration.
• Analyzing the problem: Once the problem
is identified, students should analyze it to
determine its scope and underlying causes.
• Generating solutions: After analyzing the
problem, students should generate possible
solutions. This step requires creativity and
critical thinking.
• Evaluating solutions: The next step is to
evaluate each solution based on its
effectiveness and practicality
• Selecting the best solution: The final step
is to select the best solution and implement it.

problem solving to improve the
operations of healthcare facilities.

Develop critical thinking skills- Nurses can

use problem solving to develop their critical
thinking skills, which can help them to identify
and analyze problems.
The nursing process can be used as a guide for
problem solving. The steps of the nursing
process are:
 Assessment: Use critical thinking to gather
information and brainstorm
 Diagnosis: Identify the problem and any
obstacles or triggers
 Planning: Collaborate to formulate the
desired outcome
 Implementation: Carry out the actions to
resolve the problem
 Evaluation: Reflect on the results to
determine if the issue was resolved.

urgently need to be addressed.
 The students become appreciative and
grateful for the achievement of scientists.
Critical thinking, open-mindedness and
wise judgment are among scientific
attitudes and values inculcated through
competence in the scientific method.
 The students learn to accept the opinions
and evidence shared by others.

DISADVANTAGES

 This method will become monotonous if

used to frequently.
 The problem-solving method can easily
lead to the selection of trivial and
untimely topics.
 This is appropriate for developing
cognitive competencies, but not for
bringing about affective changes.
 Generally speaking problem – solving
involves mental activity only.
 Small children do not posses sufficient
background information & therefore they
fail to participation in discussion.
 Students may not have adequate reference
and sources books.
 It need very capable teacher to provide
effective guidance and knowledge to
students.
 It is a time-consuming process, teacher
may find it difficult to complete the
syllabus.
SUMMARY
Till now I have discussed about the problem-solving method, its definition, purpose, skills, approaches, steps,
its uses, methods, and advantages and disadvantages.

CONCLUSION
The problem-solving approach in nursing is a process for making clinical decisions to improve patient
health. Nurses use critical thinking and quick decision-making skills to react to unexpected problems in the fast-
paced healthcare environment.
