Development of a Smart Waste Sorting Bin for Sustainable Waste
Management
A. Introduction
This research focuses on developing a smart waste sorting bin that utilizes computer
vision, AI, and Java programming to automate the process of separating different types
of waste. By integrating user-friendly features and an efficient sorting mechanism, this
project aims to promote sustainable waste management practices within the university
community.
B. Background of Study
The growing global waste management challenge highlights the need for innovative
solutions to improve waste disposal practices. Traditional waste sorting methods are
often inefficient and prone to human error. This project aims to address these limitations
by developing a smart waste sorting bin that leverages advanced technologies to
enhance waste identification, separation, and data analysis.
C. Research Description
General Objective
This study aims to design and develop a smart waste sorting bin that efficiently identifies
and separates different types of waste, promoting sustainable waste management
practices.
Specific Objective
1. design a system capable of:
a. Identifying various waste types (e.g., plastic, paper, glass, metal, organic) using
computer vision and AI algorithms implemented in Java.
b. Separating identified waste types into designated compartments using a robotic
arm or a conveyor belt system controlled by a Java application.
c. Providing user feedback on proper waste disposal practices through an intuitive
user interface.
2. develop the system using:
a. JavaCV for image processing and computer vision.
b. DeepLearning4J for AI model development and deployment.
c. JSerialComm for communication with sensors and actuators.
d. JavaFX for user interface development.
3. Test the system:
a. Conduct thorough testing to ensure the system accurately identifies and
separates waste types.
b. Evaluate the system’s performance, accuracy, and efficiency.
4. Analyze collected data:
a. Implement data collection mechanisms to track waste composition, sorting
accuracy, and user interactions.
b. Analyze the collected data to identify areas for improvement and optimize system
performance.
5. Prepare an implementation plan:
a. Define the hardware and software components required for the smart waste
sorting bin.
Scope
This research focuses on developing a smart waste sorting bin that automates the process
of separating different types of waste. Utilizing computer vision, AI, and Java programming,
the project aims to accurately identify and classify common waste types (e.g., plastic, paper,
glass, metal, organic) using AI algorithms. A robotic arm or conveyor belt system, controlled
by a Java application, will then physically separate the identified waste into designated
compartments. The project also includes the design of an intuitive user interface to provide
feedback on proper waste disposal practices and potentially display data on waste
composition. Finally, data collection mechanisms will be implemented to track waste
composition, sorting accuracy, and user interactions, enabling continuous improvement of
system performance.
Limitation
Several limitations may impact the effectiveness of the smart waste sorting bin. Achieving
high accuracy in waste identification using AI algorithms can be challenging, especially with
complex or mixed waste types. Factors like lighting conditions, object occlusion, and
variations in waste materials can affect the system's performance. Additionally, the physical
limitations of the robotic arm or conveyor belt system (e.g., weight capacity, speed,
precision) may affect the efficiency and accuracy of waste separation. Developing a fully
functional and robust smart waste sorting bin can be expensive due to the cost of hardware
components, AI model development, and software engineering. Finally, encouraging
widespread user adoption will require effective communication, education, and potentially
incentives to promote its use.

Development of a Comprehensive Website System for Ciudad Verde Homes
Homeowners
A. Introduction
This research focuses on developing a comprehensive website system designed to
facilitate the homeowners of Ciudad Verde Homes Subdivision. By integrating user-
friendly features, the homeowners of the subdivision should be able to do general tasks
such as transactions and complaints that requires them to go face to face with the
Homeowners Association and personally visiting the subdivision’s clubhouse.
B. Background of Study
The overwhelming feedbacks and complaints from the homeowners of Ciudad Verde
Homes to HOA (Homeowners Association) about their management indicates the need
for a website system that will cater to the needs of both homeowners and the betterment
of HOA. This website will help the homeowners about managing their paperwork needs,
payment of water bills including the detailed reading of their water usage, payment of
monthly dues, filing of complaints, monitoring of events including the joining process for
the said events, schedule for garbage collection, and filing of important requests.
C. Research Description
General Objective
This study aims to design and develop a website system that helps the homeowners of
Ciudad Verde Homes manage their general needs and transactions inside the
subdivision easier and with less hassle.
Specific Objective
1. design the system capable of:
a. Online payment of water bills including the specific total and detailed
consumption breakdown
b. Online payment of monthly dues.
c. Granting and approval of the documents requested by homeowners with
proper certification and signature of HOA.
d. filing of complaints.
e. Scheduling of events and may allow the homeowners to sign their
participation if possible.
f. Posting of important dates to remember with corresponding details.
2. develop the system using:
a. HTML, CSS, Javascript for building a website;
b. PHP as a programming language;
c. MySQL as database
3. test the system;
4. evaluate the system using ISO 25010 standards; and
5. Prepare an implementation plan
Scope
This research focuses on developing a website system to make homeowners general needs
and transactions easier. The said needs and transactions may be accessed through this
system through various menus in its user-friendly interface. Proper registration of
homeowners is required for accessing the website and fully experience its functions. The
functions of this website include specific menus for payment of water bills and monthly dues,
Granting and approval of the documents requested by homeowners with proper certification
and signature of HOA made secured by proper utilization of PHP and MySQL. Event
Calendars can be seen in this website, if an event needs the registration and participation of
homeowners, they may be able to directly do so. Forms for complaints and suggestions are
also present in this website. Finally, this research will explore user interface design principles
to ensure the application is intuitive and user-friendly.
Limitation
There are several limitations this research may encounter. There are plenty of homeowners
who are not knowledgeable enough when it comes to technologies, hence navigating
through this website may be a challenge to them without proper guidance. Since this is a
website, internet connection is required. Not all homeowners have the luxury to have a good
internet affecting their experience on the website especially when there are plenty of people
accessing it at the same time. Lastly, HOA who were suppose to be managing the website
might take time to adapt to this new system.

options. Homeowners should also be notified if their bills are due. A system that will
allow the users to file document requests for their legal needs and will allow HOA for
approval and proper certification of the requested documents. Specific menu’s will also
be present to show the events, announcements, and schedules to the homeowners. If an
event needs the registration and participation of homeowners, they may be able to
directly do so. A proper form will be on the website and the homeowners can file their
complaints and suggestions there.
