Assignment#2 – Part I

Due: Sunday, January 31st, 2020, 11:00 pm

Problem 1 (7 Points)
The 𝑥 -velocity in fully developed laminar flow between parallel plates is given by:
1 𝑑𝑝
𝑢= ( ) (𝑦 2 − ℎ2 ) (1)
2𝜇 𝑑𝑥
The 𝑦 -velocity is 𝑣 = 0. Determine the volumetric strain rate, the vorticity, and the rate of angular
deformation. What is the shear stress at the plate surface? Assume that 𝜇, ℎ, and 𝑑𝑝⁄𝑑𝑥 are
constants.

Problem 2 (3 Points)
For a certain incompressible flow field, it is suggested that the velocity components are given by
the equations:
𝑢 = 2𝑥𝑦 𝑣 = −𝑥 2 𝑦 𝑤=0 (2)
Is this a physically possible flow field? Explain.

Problem 3 (10 Points)

A velocity field is described by the vector:
→ 𝑦𝑧 2𝑥𝑧 𝑥𝑦
𝑽=( 2 ) 𝐢̂ − ( 2 ) 𝐣̂ + ( 2 ̂
)𝐤 (3)
2
𝑥 +𝑦 +𝑧 2 2
𝑥 +𝑦 +𝑧 2 𝑥 + 𝑦2 + 𝑧2

Does the field satisfy the equation of continuity for an incompressible flow? If so, compute the
pressure gradient assuming frictionless flow with negligible body forces.
