Tutorial 2: (Planar kinematics of rigid bodies)
Name Class
Question 1: For a short period of time, the motor turns gear A with a constant angular
acceleration of = 45 rad/s2, starting from rest. Determine the velocity of the cylinder
and the distance it travels in three seconds. The cord is wrapped around pulley D which
is rigidly attached to gear B.
Question 2: If the angular velocity of the drum is increased uniformly from
6 rad/s when t = 0 to 12 rad/s when t = 5 s, determine the magnitudes of the
velocity and acceleration of points A and B on the belt when t =1 s.
At this instant the points are located as shown.
Question 3: The brake drum is attached to a larger flywheel that is not shown.
The motion of the brake drum is defined by the relation θ = 36t— 1.6t2,
where θ is expressed in radians and t in seconds.
Determine (a) the angular velocity at t = 2 s,
(b) the number of revolutions executed by the brake drum before coming to rest.
Question 4: A plastic film moves over two drums. During a 4s interval the s
of the tape is increased uniformly from vo = 2 ft/s to VI = 4 ft/s
Knowing that the tape does not slip on the drums, determine (a)
angular acceleration of drum B, (b) the number of revolutions executed
by drum B during the 4s interval.
Question 5: At the instant θ =50˚, the slotted guide is moving upward with an
acceleration of 3 m/s2 and a velocity of 2 m/s. Determine the angular acceleration
and angular velocity of link AB at this instant. Note: The upward motion of the
guide is in the negative y direction.

Question 6: In the simplified sketch of a ball bearing shown, the diameter of the inner
race A is 60 mm and the diameter of each ball is 12 mm. The outer race B is stationary
while the inner race has an angular velocity of 3600 rpm. Determine (a) the speed of
the center of each ball, (b) the angular velocity of each ball, (c) the number of times
per minute each ball describes a complete circle.
Question 7: Determine the angular velocity of the spool. The cable wraps around the
inner core. and the spool does not slip on the platform P.
Question 8: If rod AB slides along the horizontal slot with a velocity of 60 ft/s,
determine the angular velocity of link BC at the instant shown.
Question 9: At the instant shown, end A of the rod has the velocity and
acceleration shown. Determine the angular acceleration of the rod and
acceleration of end B of the rod.
Question 10: At the instant shown, cable AB has a velocity of 3 m/s and
acceleration of 15 m/s2, while the gear rack has a velocity of 1.5 m/s and
acceleration of 0.75 m/s2. Determine the angular acceleration of the gear
at this instant.
Question 11: At the instant shown, the wheel rotates with an angular
velocity = 12 rad/s and an angular acceleration of = 6 rad/s2. Determine
the angular acceleration of link BC and the acceleration of piston C at
this instant.
