Describe the hybridisation in case of PCl5.

Why are the axial bonds longer as compared to equatorial

bonds?

sp3 d

Because axial bond pairs suffer more repulsive interaction from the equatorial bond pairs, therefore axial bonds have been
found to be slightly longer and hence slightly weaker than equatorial bonds.

What is meant by the term bond order? Calculate the bond order of N 2 and O2 molecule?

Correct definition

Bond order of N2 molecule=3

Bond order of O2 molecule=2

Out of peroxide ion (O22-) and superoxide ion (O2- ) which has larger bond length

and why?

O22- has a larger bond length thanO2-.

The bond order of O2– is 1.5 while that of O22- is 1.0.

The lesser the bond order, the greater is the bond length as the bond order is

inversely proportional to bond length.

Hence O22- has a larger bond length thanO2-.

Q Explain the structure of PCl5 according to hybridization. Why all P –Cl bonds lengths are not equivalent in PCl5?

PCl5 has a trigonal bipyramidal structure, sp3d hybridization.

Due to these two Cl atoms lie along the axial line and feel more repulsions and the other three Cl atoms lie
along the equatorial plane feel less repulsions. Hence The bond lengths are different.

(a) Q Explain why PC15 is trigonal bipyramidal whereas SF6 is octahedral?.

Water molecule has bent structure whereas carbon dioxide molecule is linear, why?

A (a) In PCl5, sp3d hybridisation is present but in SF6 sp3d2 hybridisation results in octahedral geometry .

(b) Due to presence of two lone pairs of electrons on oxygen atom in H2O the repulsion between Ip-lp is more.
CO2 undergoes sp hybridization resulting in linear shape (O = C = O) while H 2O undergoes sp3 hybridisation resulting
in distorted tetrahedral or bent structure.
Q Predict hybridization of central atom in the following species: (i) water
(ii) 𝑃𝐶𝑙5

A (a)sp3

(b)sp3d

Q (a) Distinguish sigma (  ) and a pi (  ) bond. (any two differences)

(c) Which out of NH3 and NF3 has higher dipole moment and why?
A. (a) Any two correct differences between a sigma (  ) and a pi (  ) bond (b) NH3 and NF3 both have a
geometry that is pyramidal in nature. For each molecule, N denotes an atom that has only one pair. On the other
hand, F represents electronegative molecules. Hence, the H & N- F bond has polarity than bonds denoting N-H. It is
estimated that the dipole of NH3 will be 1.46 D, while NF3 will be measured as 0.24D at the same time. Thereby
NH3 will have a high dipole when compared to NF3. all bonds denote that N-H proceeds in the same direction,
adding the number of lone pairs. On the other hand, bonds with the denotation of N-F move in the opposite
direction, which cuts down the sole pair moment.

Q. Which out of NH3 & NF3 has higher dipole moment & why?
A In NH3 all dipoles are towards lone pair whereas in NF3 dipoles are opposite to lone pair of
electrons.
Q a) Explain the formation of H2 molecule on the basis of valence bond theory? b) Define
Hydrogen bond. Is it weaker or stronger than Vander Waal's forces ?

A a) In the formation of hydrogen molecule from H- atoms, attractive forces are more than repulsive
forces therefore, lowering of energy takes place.
(b) Hydrogen bond is force of attraction between hydrogen and most electronegative element like F,
N O etc. It is stronger than Vander Waal's forces of attraction because extent of overlapping is more
in H-Bond.
