General information

Purpose
The purpose of the seminar work in this course is to learn how to apply user research methods to
collect relevant information, and to use the gathered information as a foundation for developing a
digital product.

Practical information
We will have four seminar sessions divided into two parts. Part 1 will involve user research and
analysis and Part 2 will be about concept ideation and wireframing. Throughout the course, you will
have the opportunity to ask questions and get feedback on your work during the seminar sessions.

Grading
A point system will be used to grade the seminar assignments. The points correspond to grade 5, 4,
3, and U (see below). Part 1 and Part 2 each have a maximum of 100 points. You will receive a final
seminar grade based on the average of your total points from the two parts. You must pass both
parts to get a final grade.

Total points correspond to the following grades:

3: 60 – 75 points
4: 76 – 87 points
5: 88 – 100 points
Fail (U): less than 60 points

In case you would not pass the assignments, you will have the opportunity to redo them. However,
you will not be able to get more than 60 points (Grade 3). This also applies if you submit your work
past the deadlines.
Part 1: User Research and Analysis

Project background
In an ideal world, the opportunities for conducting research should not depend on where in the
world you are located. However, this is not always the case. Researchers in developing countries run
the risk of being isolated from the research community in other parts of the world, and this can lead
to difficulties connecting and collaborating with other researchers.

ICT4D is a South African project that aims to create an accessible platform where data, information,
and knowledge can be shared. They are currently looking to develop a website where researchers in
South Africa can connect with researchers in other parts of the world so that they can, for example,
share knowledge and start collaborations.

The ICT4D project already has a website, which can be found here. In this project, your task is to
develop a new version of this website which makes it easier for researchers in South Africa to find
and connect with other researchers across the world.

Your main task in this first part of the assignment is to conduct interviews and usability tests with a
group of people to learn more about how this website can be improved. You should primarily work
with the desktop version of the website, but if you want, you can also work with the mobile version
as an addition.
Instructions

Step 1
Start by defining the target group that you are going to recruit for your interviews and usability tests.

Step 2
After you have decided on your target group, it is time to plan and conduct your research. It is
recommended to start recruitment early as it can take time. You should recruit at least 5
participants.

Step 3
Make an interview guide with the purpose of gaining insights about the users. Here are some things
to think about when preparing for the interviews:

The users
• Who are they?
• What are their needs?

Situation of use
• What are the tasks that the users want to accomplish when using the website?
• What is important for them when they use the website?

User experience
• What do they think and feel about the current version of the website?
• What does not work well when they use it?
• What possibilities of improvement do they see?

Step 4
After you have completed your interview guide, you are going to prepare for how to conduct the
usability testing with the users.

Start by defining two or three tasks that you want the users to perform. Think about the purpose of
the current version of the website as you define the tasks, and which features that are important. A
task should consist of at least 3 steps that the user needs to take to complete it.

After you have agreed on the tasks, you should plan for the tests. Here are some things to think
about:

• How are you going to perform the usability testing?

• Should the users think aloud?
• How will you document the testing?

Step 5
Conduct your interviews and usability tests. Make sure that you follow your interview guide and
your plan for how to conduct the tests.
Step 6
Analyze the data from the interviews and tests. Follow the guidelines for analyzing data provided in
Lecture 3: Qualitative Methods.

Step 7
Develop one primary persona and one secondary persona based on your research results. The
personas should (at least) include a bio, goals, needs, and frustrations.

Create scenarios that describe the current situation of the personas. Think about how your personas
use the website and create the scenarios based on this.

Step 8
Use your primary persona and scenario to create a user journey. Identify the specific stages the
persona passes through to accomplish the goal when using the website. Include what the persona is
doing, thinking, and feeling.

Step 9
Write a report about the research you conducted. You should introduce the project, write about the
goals of your research, why and how participants were selected, the research methods used, how
data was analyzed, and your findings. Make sure to include the personas, scenarios, user journey
and other relevant documents, such as your interview guide and questions.
