Homework Assignment #2 – Thinking Fast and Slow
Your homework this week is to read Daniel Kahneman’s book, “Thinking Fast and Slow,” Part I. Two Systems.
After watching lecture (all parts), and completing this week’s reading, please write about Kahneman’s theory of the two systems (System 1 and System 2) that drive the way we think. This should be a 2-3 page paper that:
1) Explains the theory to someone unfamiliar with it (20 pts.)
2) Discusses your degree of belief in this theory (20 pts.) 3) References both your personal experiences that contribute to your degree of belief (20 pts) AND 4) References specific evidence described in Part. I of Kahnemen’s book (10 pts.)
Also,
5) Provide a description of the difference between rationality and logic. Give an
example of your own (not from the lecture or book). (15 pts.)
6) Philosophers and social scientists up to and including the 1970’s broadly
accepted two ideas about human nature: a. `First, people are generally rational – they use sound thinking to make decisions b. Second, emotions such as fear, affection, and hatred explain most of the occasions on which people depart from rationality.
Kahneman and his research partner, Tversky, challenged both of these
assumptions. How was there work revolutionary? (10 pts.) Why was it so readily accepted? (5 pts.)
