Networks might use Error Correcting Codes (ECC) instead of relying solely on Error Detection

and Retransmission for several reasons:

1. Efficiency in Real-Time Communication: Error Correcting Codes allow for the

detection and correction of errors within the data stream without requiring a

retransmission. This is particularly advantageous in real-time applications, such as video

conferencing or online gaming, where delays caused by retransmitting lost or corrupted

packets can significantly degrade the user experience. By correcting errors on-the-fly,

ECC ensures smoother communication and reduces latency (Forouzan, 2017).

2. Bandwidth Conservation: Utilizing Error Correcting Codes can help conserve

bandwidth by minimizing the need for additional data transmissions. In scenarios where

network resources are limited or costly, reducing the frequency of retransmissions can

lead to more efficient use of available bandwidth. This is especially important in wireless

networks, where signal quality can fluctuate, and retransmissions can consume valuable

resources (Stallings, 2015).
