QUARTER # 4
SELF- LEARNING KIT # 1
FOREWORD
This Self Learning Kit (SLK) is designed as one of the main tools in learning
Mathematics and is based on the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
Mathematics. This is an initiative of the Schools Division of Ilocos Sur to achieve the
goals of the Department of Education for Learning Continuity in Basic Education
Curriculum amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
It is expected that each learner will study carefully and diligently each lesson
included in each SLK. However, any supplementary tools or other forms of learning
modalities like video lessons, TV-assisted instructions, online learning, or online
coaching by teachers can also be undertaken to ensure quality education on blended
learning approaches.
The given activities and assessments are to be answered by the learner himself
and answers should be written in separate sheets to be submitted to the teachers
concerned within a specified period of time.

Presentation of the Lesson
Do you think in your family, you have different arm spans? How many in your
family members have the same arm spans? What is the most common measure of arm
spans? To answer these questions, you will do the following:
Instructions:
1. Using a tape measure or a meter stick, measure your individual arm span. Use
the centimeter (cm) unit of length. Round off measures to the nearest cm.
2. Write on a sheet of paper each measured arm span.
Questions:
1. What do these numbers represent?
2. Can we get clear and precise information immediately as we look at these
numbers?
3. How can we make these numbers meaningful for anyone who does not know
about the description of these numbers?
Short Discussion:
In our daily activities, we encounter a lot of sorting and organizing objects, data,
or things like what you just did. These are just few of the activities of doing Statistics.
What are some of the few activities that you just did?
Measuring the arm span, recording the measure, organizing the data, presenting
the data in a systematic manner, all of these ideas are related to another branch of
mathematics called STATISTICS.
What is Statistics?
- It is the study of the collection, organization, analysis, and interpretation of
data. It deals with all aspects of this, including the planning of data collection
in terms of the design of surveys and experiments.
Statisticians contribute to scientific inquiry by applying their knowledge to the design of
surveys and experiments; the collection, processing, and analysis of data; and the
interpretation of the results
3
Illustrative Example 1:
Here are some examples of activities where Statistics is involved.
a. Census of population
b. registration of election voters.
c. 46% of people polled trust the present government, while
d. 14% doubt the government capacity, and the rest abstained
e. A school's drop-out rate has decreased by 2%.
f. 88% of people questioned feel that it is better to exercise at least twice a week.
Illustrative Example 2:
Below is a sample template of checklist questionnaire on causes of bullying.
Indicators 5 4 3 2 1
1. Lack of Involvement in child’s interests, activities, and daily life
2. Lack of supervision
3. Overlay permissive lack of limits
4. Harsh, Physical discipline
5. Unsupervised break times
SAMPLE ANSWERS
Name (Optional):_John Titor__ Age:___13____ Gender:Male______
Directions: Please put a check mark under the column that corresponds to your answer
in each item. To best express your opinion, be guided by the following codes: 5-Strongly
Agree; 4-Agree; 3-Moderately Agree; 2-Disagree; and 1-Strongly Disagree
Indicators 5 4 3 2 1
1. Lack of Involvement in child’s interests, activities, and daily life /
2. Lack of supervision /
3. Overlay permissive lack of limits /
4. Harsh, Physical discipline /
5. Unsupervised break times /
4
Illustrative Example 3:
Here are some problems or questions that can be answered using Statistics.
a. What fraction of Filipinos is living below poverty line?
b. What is the school’s graduation rate?
c. What is the ration of boy to girl in your class?
Here are also some problems or question that CANNOT BE answered using
statistics.
a. What is your favorite food?
b. Who is the oldest in your class?
c. How old are you?
A statistical question is a question that should have different answers like for
example a percent, range, or average.
A question is not a statistical question if has an exact answer.
Illustrative Example 4:
Solving Problems that needs statistics. Identifying which is the best answer.
1. In a survey about practice time per week for high school athletes, 22% practice 1
hour, 40% practice 2 hours, 25 % practice 3 hours, 10 % practice 4 hours and 3
% practice more than 4 hours.
Which of the questions is most likely to have produced these results?
a. What is the average practice time per week required for your sport?
b. How much time you spent in doing homework during the week?
c. Is practice time longer on Mondays than Tuesdays?
d. Which sport renders most time practices?
Choice a will be the answer since the question is related to the problem. b, c and d are
not related to the problem.
5
For choice c, Jessica never asked her costumers about what type of plants they
have.
Generalization:
In this lesson, you learned/different ways of presenting data in an
organized manner. You also learned a new area of mathematics called Statistics which
mean the study of the collection, organization, analysis, and interpretation of data.
You’ve also learned how to make statistical questions and to differentiate statistical
question and not statistical question.

METHODS OF COLLECTING
DATA
In order the data collected to be organized systematically for easier and faster
analysis we have the following methods to practice.
1. Observation
- a method that make use of the different human senses in
gathering information.
Different ways
a. counting
b. measuring
2. Interview
- - Is a conversation where questions are asked and answers
are given.
-direct method of gathering data because this requires a
face-to-face inquiry of the respondents.
3. Questionnaire
- Indirect method of gathering data because this make use of
written questions to be answered by the respondents.
4. Registration or census
- written publications.
5. Survey
-is defined as a research method used for collecting
data from a pre-defined group of respondents to gain information
and insights on various topics of interest. Surveys have a variety of
purposes and can be carried out in many ways depending on the
methodology chosen and the objectives to be achieved.
6. Experimentation
-Commonly used by physicist and chemist to gather data.
EXAMPLE 1
Mr. Hidalgo wants to find the number of students in his advisory class who have
birthdays falling on each of the 12 months. She collected the data in the following
manner.
a. Checked the date of birth of each student in the class registry.
b. Asked students to raise their hands if their birthdays fall in a certain
9
month.
c. Made a form and asked the students to write their birthdates and return
the form to him.
Question:
- What is the data collection method used in each case?
Solution:
a. registration or census
b. observation
c. conducting survey
EXAMPLE 2
The manager of Kiko’s eatery requested his customers to fill out this
questionnaire
Useu
KIKO’S RESTAURANT
Question:
What type of data-collection method does the manager used?
Solution: Conducting Surveys
EXAMPLE 3
Identify or tell how the following data are gathered or collected in observation.
a. students coming to class late.
b. your classmates’ waistline.
10
c. defective bulb in your classroom.
d. your classmates’ temperature.
Solution:
a. counting.
b. measuring.
c. counting.
d. measuring.
