CHAPTER ONE
1.0 Introduction
1.1 Objective of the Industrial Training
The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme is an avenue for many students to see
the practical aspects of what is being taught in school, it is an avenue for students to learn
from their colleagues from other institutions what they were taught in school. it gives
students an opportunity to broaden their perspectives, understanding and knowledge in
various fields of study, it exposes students to realities of work places, and the scheme
gives room for interaction with professionals in their fields.
5
Provide students with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real
work situation, thereby bridging the gap between university work and actual
practices;
SIWES has been generally accepted and has become a prerequisite for the award of
Diploma and Degree certificates in most tertiary institutions in Nigeria. This is also in
accordance with the educational policy of the Nigerian government.

CHAPTER TWO
2.0 Introduction to the Organization
I was posted to my department on my first day by the Head of Departments who also
introduced me to the trainees in the IT department and told me more about my role as a
student in the computer department. I was introduced to computer system (Hardware,
software, etc).
Micro – Computers
Mainframe Computers
2.3.1 Hardware
The hardware of a computer system is made up of a number of electronic devices
connected together. These are the parts of the computer system we can see, touch and
move from one place to another. Examples of hardware components include: Visual
Display Unit (VDU), keyboard, mouse, joystick, light pens, printers, scanners, modems,
etc.
Hardware components are divided into 3 different parts:
8
I. INPUT COMPONENTS: These devices are connected to the computer
through ports and sockets, they are used to send information to the computer
system, examples of input component include; keyboard, mouse, scanner, etc.
II. PROCESSING COMPONENT: This processes information that has been
sent to the computer system through the input devices, the central processing
system is the major processing component of a computer system
III. OUTPUT COMPONENT: These devices brings out the processed
information, examples of output components include; monitor, printers, speakers,
etc.
2.3.2 Software
Software is a program that runs on a computer system; Examples of software include
Microsoft Word, Corel-Draw, Internet explorer, Microsoft Access, Visual Basic, Oracle
10g, Microsoft Power-point, Dream weaver, Microsoft Excel, etc.
2.3.3 Categories of Software
Software is divided into two categories.
Systems Software
Application Software
System Software: includes the operating system and all the utilities that enable the
computer windows to function effectively.
Application Software: includes programs that do real work to users. For example, word
processors, spreadsheet packages, web editors, graphic designs and database management
systems.
Microsoft Word is a word processing package that can be used to create, edit, view, store,
retrieve, and print textual materials. Examples of word processors include; MultiMate,
Loco script, Professional Writers, WordStar, etc.
Spacing: (only accessible through the Format Command): Adjust the “Line
Spacing” as well as the spacing before or after a new paragraph.
9
Numbering: Word automatically places numbers in front of each new line of
text.
Bullets: Word automatically places bullets in front of each new line of text.
Indentation: Increase and Decrease the amount of space between the left margin
and the left side of the text.
Format Painter: Once you get a section of text to look the way you want it to, you can
copy all of its attributes to another section of text using the “Format Painter” tool. This
tool looks like a paintbrush and is located to the right of the “Paste” tool on the standard
toolbar.
10
Click Next. Follow the instructions to finish installing Windows, which include
naming your computer and setting up an initial user account.
11
Queries: This is used to extract data from tables based on user-supplied
criteria. Queries enable users to view fields from more than one table in the same
record, they are also used to perform computations i.e. calculations.
Forms: This display data in a useful format similar to the day-today office
form based on users’ defined custom format. Forms can also be used to perform
computations.
Reports: This is used to preview and print tables or queries
FUNCTIONS OF A DATABASE
Database provides data integration
Retrieval of stored data is easy and fast
It encourages data independence
Database saves time of completion and processing among others.
FEATURES OF A DATABASE
Duplication of data items is minimized
The stored data is usually large
Data can be accessed in many different ways

CHAPTER THREE
3.0 Conclusion
The opportunity to work at Gateway Computer Training Institute gave me the chance to
experience a variety of types of computer activities in theory and practical aspects. Many
thanks are extended to Gateway Computer Training Institute for allowing me to
undertake my industrial training with them, and to use the details of the projects I was
involved in for inclusion in this report.
