The Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was established in
1973. It was aimed at solving the problems of lack of adequate practical skills by
graduates of tertiary institutions.

1.4 Aims and Objectives of SIWES

The objectives of the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme are to:
Provide an avenue for students in the Nigerian Universities to acquire industrial
skills and experience in their respective courses of study;
Prepare students for the work situation they are likely to meet after graduation;
Expose students to work methods and techniques in handling equipment and
machinery that may not be available in the universities;

5
Provide students with an opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in real
work situation, thereby bridging the gap between university work and actual
practices;
SIWES has been generally accepted and has become a prerequisite for the award of
Diploma and Degree certificates in most tertiary institutions in Nigeria. This is also in
accordance with the educational policy of the Nigerian government.

1.5 Components and Composition of SIWES

The main operators of SIWES are the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), Nigeria

CHAPTER TWO
2.0 Introduction to the Organization
I was posted to my department on my first day by the Head of Departments who also
introduced me to the trainees in the IT department and told me more about my role as a
student in the computer department. I was introduced to computer system (Hardware,
software, etc).

2.1 What is Computer?

A computer is a device that accepts data as input, processes it and produces a result as
output.

2.2 Types of Computer

Mini – Computers

Micro – Computers

Mainframe Computers

2.3 COMPUTER SYSTEM

A computer system is made up of both hardware and software. Software is another term
for computer programs, these are programs that run on a computer system, the hardware
components are useless without the necessary software. Hardware refers to the physical
components that make up a computer system. These include the computer's processor,
memory, monitor, keyboard, mouse, disk drive, printers, etc.

2.3.1 Hardware
The hardware of a computer system is made up of a number of electronic devices
connected together. These are the parts of the computer system we can see, touch and
move from one place to another. Examples of hardware components include: Visual
Display Unit (VDU), keyboard, mouse, joystick, light pens, printers, scanners, modems,
etc.
Hardware components are divided into 3 different parts:

8
I. INPUT COMPONENTS: These devices are connected to the computer
through ports and sockets, they are used to send information to the computer
system, examples of input component include; keyboard, mouse, scanner, etc.
II. PROCESSING COMPONENT: This processes information that has been
sent to the computer system through the input devices, the central processing
system is the major processing component of a computer system
III. OUTPUT COMPONENT: These devices brings out the processed
information, examples of output components include; monitor, printers, speakers,
etc.
2.3.2 Software
Software is a program that runs on a computer system; Examples of software include
Microsoft Word, Corel-Draw, Internet explorer, Microsoft Access, Visual Basic, Oracle
10g, Microsoft Power-point, Dream weaver, Microsoft Excel, etc.
2.3.3 Categories of Software
Software is divided into two categories.
Systems Software

Application Software

System Software: includes the operating system and all the utilities that enable the
computer windows to function effectively.
Application Software: includes programs that do real work to users. For example, word
processors, spreadsheet packages, web editors, graphic designs and database management
systems.

2.4 MICROSOFT WORD

Microsoft Word is a word processing package that can be used to create, edit, view, store,
