COLOUR THEORY introduction

PRIMARY COLOURS Three colours that cannot be mixed. They form the basis of
all other colours

SECONDARY COLOURS Two primary colours mixed together. When mixing


colours always add the darker colour to the lighter colour

green

purple

TERTIARY COLOURS These are created by mixing a primary colour and


secondary colour

green blue blue/green

green yellow yellow/green

purple blue blue/purple

purple red red/purple

orange yellow yellow/orange

orange red red/orange

Or by changing the proportions of all three primary colours

yellow red blue fawn

red blue yellow brown

blue yellow red grey


MONOCHROMATIC This refers to the use of ONE colour and all its tints and
shades
POLYCHROMATIC A polychromatic scheme involves the use of a broad range of
colours (their tints and shades) The combination of colours can result in a very
vibrant artwork.

NEUTRALS Neutrals are used to make different shades of a colour. Black will
make a colour darker, the result is called a shade. White will make a colour
lighter, this is called a tint.

COMPLIMENTARY COLOURS Colours which lie opposite each other on the colour
wheel. When placed next to each other each colour will appear at its most
intense.

ANALAGOUS COLOURS These are colours which are similar and lie close to each
other on the colour wheel. The close relationship of these colours will result in
colour harmony
red ------------------------orange / orange -------------------yellow

yellow --------------------green / green --------------------blue

blue ----------------------purple / purple --------------------red

WARM/COOL COLOURS

In color theory we can divide the color wheel in half, dividing the colors into
warm colors and cool colors.

Warm colours are said to bring energy, and appear to visually advance. Reds,
oranges and yellows are considered warm colors.

Cool colours are said to bring a feeling of calm. and appear to visually
recede. Blues, greens and some purples are considered cool colors.

COLOUR SYMBOLISM We all tend to associate different colours with different


moods and certain emotions. The following describes some of the traditional
associations of colours used in painting

yellow

red
blue

green

orange

purple

white

black
