ME – 102: Engineering Mechanics
End Term Examination, 2021-22 (ODD SEMESTER)

TIME: 1 DAY MM: 35

Note: Attempt all questions.

1. For the system of forces shown in figure 1, what is the torque about axis A-B?
Note: The 100N and 50N forces are in the x-z plane and are perpendicular to line
AC. (Refer Fig. 1).

Fig. 1

2. Find the compressive force in Pawl AB. What is the resultant supporting force
system at E? (Refer Fig. 2).

Fig. 2
3. A 5 KN hoist to lift railroad cars for truck repair has a 150 KN capacity and hangs
from a truss with an L- shaped member to clear boxcars. What are the forces in
the straight members? (Refer Fig. 3).

Fig. 3

4. A beam supports load C weighing 500 N. At supports A and B, the co-efficient of

friction is 0.2. At the contact surface between load C and the beam, the co-efficient
of friction is 0.75. If force F moves C steadily to the left, how far does it move before
the beam begins to move? The beam weighs 200 N. Neglect the height t of the
beam in your calculations. (Refer Fig. 4).

Fig. 4
5. Two identical light rods are pinned together at B. End C of rod BC is pinned while
end A of rod AB rests on a rough floor having a co-efficient friction with the rod of
μd =0.5. The spring requires a force of 5 N/mm of stretch. A load F = 300 N is
applied slowly at B and then maintained constant. What is the angle θ when the
system ceases to move? The spring is un-stretched when θ = 45 degree. (Refer
Fig. 5).

6. Find the equilibrium configuration for the system of equal bars W of length 3 m and
mass 25 kg. The spring is un-stretched when the bars are horizontal and has a
spring constant of 1500N/m (use potential energy method). (Refer Fig. 6).

Fig. 6

7. A gun emplacement is shown on a cliff in figure. The muzzle velocity of the gun is
1000 m/s. At what angle α must the gun point in order to hit target A shown in the
diagram? Neglect friction. (Refer Fig. 7).
