NOTE:
1. Contractions are usually used informal replies and dialogues.
2. Pay attention to the subject and sender of the stimulus given to determine if the register of the
reply. Should the reply be a formal or an informal?
3. When describing experience, use adjectives that are appropriate to what you are trying to say.
4. Include SENSORY DETAILS (sound, sight, smell, touch and taste) to help you described an
event.
5. The complimentary close comes before the sender’s signature. Choose an appropriate
complimentary close depending on the register if the email or letter.
6. In an email, it is not necessary to use a complimentary close. You can simply sign off your email
with your name.
One of the criteria for assessing MUET extended writing is cohesion and coherence.
Cohesion is the organisations of sentences and ideas in your essay within the paragraphs.
Coherence refers to the linking of ideas in a logical sequence of order.
Cohesive devices are used to link ideas and supporting details more effectively within the
sentences, between sentences and between paragraphs.
Cohesive devices improve the flow of ideas and show writing organisation.
