Post Trip Requirements Essay
My first time traveling abroad was with my family to China when I was around two,
and while I do not remember much about the trip, I do remember the feeling of being
terrified. When I thought about how my experience with Italy would go, I assumed I would
feel the same, terrified. I had never been separated from my family for longer than a
weekend, I could not sleep anywhere besides my bed, and I feared being alone somewhere
I was not familiar with. Thankfully, I was wrong about everything I assumed about Italy. The
people were welcoming, warm, and felt comfortable to be around. The hotel we stayed at,
Hotel La Pigna, had the most wonderful staff you could imagine. They were humorous,
kind, and helpful. They went out of their way to make our stay as comfortable as possible. I
adventured around Pietrasanta, and never once did I feel afraid of the locals or nervous
about the possibilities of what could happen. I was most excited about the food, which was
phenomenal and did not disappoint, but I was surprised to feel so much excitement for the
culture and experiences. Yes, the big cities were beautiful and bustling with life, but right
down the road from our hotel was a small gathering of shops and restaurants with a pop up
flea market. I have never been so overwhelmed with joy than biking down to the market at
night, grabbing gelato, and witnessing a show full of artists singing. That night is a night I
will remember for the rest of my life. The bigger things I experienced were fun, but the
smaller things made my experience what it was, intimate and beautiful, like falling asleep
by the pool, laying my clothes out to dry on the balcony, finding my shirt in the bushes after
it fell off the balcony, biking everywhere (even in the rain), dancing on a stage in the middle
of a park, and visiting a small shop to buy fresh fruit everyday. I think God led me down this
path to help me better find the beauty in the simpler things. He knows the monotony of my
life in the states would be so much more now that I have experienced the simpler, exciting
things. Now, I find myself walking around the neighborhood, visiting small businesses, and
immersing myself in unfamiliar cultures, and finding the beauty in life again. I know I will
find my way back to Italy again, or else He would not have made my experience a dream. I
remember telling my parents I did not want to come home and that I could find myself living
there forever and being happy. All new things seem shiny and exciting, but this one was
simply living and experiencing life to the fullest, and I didn’t want to stop. Most of what I
read about Italy was true, but some was an exaggeration especially in the area we stayed. It
was calm, quiet, and relaxing. In bigger areas we visited like the heart of Rome, the
internet’s warnings were not an exaggeration. Although, even in the midst of chaos, I am
sure there were places of tranquility and ease, and next time, I would love to challenge
myself to find them. I cannot wait to adventure back to Italy or even to other places abroad.
As much as I love home and will always find myself back here, I love adventuring even more
and experiencing a variety of cultures and people. Thank you for this opportunity
