Maths 6 Challenging Practice (Non-Routine)

Module 4: Rate, Speed and Algebra

Answers 4. ANS: 60
SOL:
Modular Exam Prep Pack
The next term in the sequence can be found
Challenging Practice Non-Routine
by adding the previous two terms.
Fifth term = x + 10 + 2x + 15
1. ANS: 39 = 3x + 25
SOL: [M1]
Let the first number by y. Sixth term = 2x + 15 + 3x + 25
= 5x + 40

3x = 37 – 25
y + 3y = 56 + 12 [M1] = 12
4y = 68 x=4 [M1]
y = 68 ÷ 4 Sixth term = 5x + 40
= 17 = 5 × 4 + 40
17 × 3 – 12 = 39 [A1] = 20 + 40
The second number is 39. = 60 [A1]
The value of the sixth term is 60.
2. ANS: 9 : 10
SOL: 5. ANS: $24
Let the first number be a. SOL:
January: $m
February: $m + $4
March: $m + $8
April: $m + $12 [M1]
May: $m + $16
June: $m + $20

a + 4a + 3a = 24 × 3 [M1]
8a = 72
a = 72 ÷ 8 $m = $20 − $12
=9 = $8
Difference between second number and [M1]
third number = 4a – 3a $m + $16 = $8 + $16
=a = $24 [A1]
=9 [A1] He saved $24 in May.
The difference between the second number
and the third number is 9.
6. ANS: 8 /h
3. ANS: (a) (4b + 2) cm (b) 26 cm SOL:
SOL: Amount of fuel used for journey = 75 ÷ 15
(a) Perimeter of triangle =5 [M1]
= b + (b + 5) + (2b – 4) Amount of fuel leaked = 15 – 5
= (4b + 2) cm = 10
[A1] Time taken until the fuel tank was empty
The perimeter of the triangle is (4b + 2) cm. = 75 ÷ 60
(b)
So, b = 6 cm. = h [M1]
[M1]
Perimeter of triangle = 4b + 2
=4×6+2 Rate of fuel leak per hour = 10 ÷
= 24 + 2
= 26 cm [A1] = 8 /h [A1]
The perimeter of the triangle is 26 cm. The rate of fuel leak per hour is 8 /h.

Module 4: Rate, Speed and Algebra

7. ANS: 21 with Cyclist X. [A1]

SOL:
Time taken for the journey = 120 ÷ 80

= h [M1]

Total fuel leak during journey = 6 ×

=9 [M1]

12 + 9 = 21 [A1]
There were 21 of fuel in its fuel tank at the start
of the journey.

8. ANS: h
SOL:
Amount of fuel used for journey = 90 ÷ 9
= 10 [M1]
Amount of fuel leaked = 20 – 4 − 10
=6 [M1]
Time taken for the journey = 6 ÷ 4

= h [A1]

The journey was h long.

9. ANS: 4 h
SOL:

30 min = h
Distance travelled by Car A in 30 min

= 80 ×
= 40 km [M1]
90 – 80 = 10 km/h
Car B’s speed was 10 km/h faster than Car A’s
speed.
Therefore, Car B travelled 10 km more than Car A
every 1 h. [M1]
So, for Car B to catch up with Car A that was
40 km ahead, Car B would take 40 ÷ 10 = 4 h.
Hence, Car B took 4 h to catch up with Car A. [A1]

10. ANS: 30 min

SOL:

10 min = h
Distance travelled by Cyclist X in 10 min

=9×
= 1.5 km
[M1]
12 – 9 = 3 km/h
Cyclist Y’s speed was 3 km/h faster than Cyclist X’s
speed. Therefore, Cyclist Y travelled 3 km more
than Cyclist X every 1 h. [M1]
So, for Cyclist Y to catch up with Cyclist X that was

1.5 km ahead, Cyclist Y would take 1.5 ÷ 3 = h.

h = 30 min
Hence, Cyclist Y took 30 min to catch up
