CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Introduction

Human beings are social creatures that require the companionship of others
to make progress in life. thus, being socially connected with other people can
relieve stress, anxiety and sadness, but lack of social connection can pose
serious risk to mental health.

Furthermore, social media has recently become part of peoples daily


activities; many of them spend hours each day on messenger, Instagram,
Facebook, and other popular social media.

Moreover, social media undoubtedly plays a significant role in the lives of


senior high school students, offering both positive connections and
detrimental influences on their mental health. while it provides opportunities
for support and self-expression, the negative effects of cyberbullying and
addiction can be detrimental.

Connection and support: Social media platforms provide an avenue for senior
high students’ to connect with family, friend, and peers. This is especially
true during times of physical separation such as going away to senior high or
having friends leave for their respective universities. Having an online
support network can offer comfort, and reduce fellings of loneliness and
isolation, which can all help ease the transition into senior high.

Expression and creativity: Social media platforms can serve as creative


outlets for senior high students to express them selves through art, music,
writing, or videos. Engaging in creative and eavors can promote positive
mental well-being and self-esteem.
While are some of the negative effects of social media on senior high
students’ mental health

Sleep Disruption: Excessive use of social media, especially before bedtime,


can disrupt sleep patterns among students. Inadequate sleep can lead to
increased stress and a decline in overall mental health.

Addiction and time management: Constant engagement with social media


my lead to a lack of time management or even addition, thus impacting
academic performance and overall well-being.

Cyberbullying and harassment: Social media platforms can expose students


to cyberbullying, harassment, or negative comments. Such online abuse can
severely impact self-esteem, at times leading to anxiety and depression.

In addition social media is taking part in different types of online networking:


It is a routine movement that inquires about the children and teenagers by
upgrading communication, social association and even specialized skills
(Horst H, 2010). Social networking sites offer different day by day openings
of interfacing with companion schoolmates, and individuals with common
interests. During the most recent 5 years, the quality of preadolescent and
Youths utilizing social networking sites has expanded significantly. Since
social networking sites are a moderately new wonder, numerous inquiries
concerning the potential effect on mental health remain unanswered.
Therefore this research undergoes the impact of social media on mental
health issues if the student. The objective of the study is to determine the
impact of social media on mental health issues such as depression and
anxiety of students.

Statement of the problem

This paper aims to find out the positive and negative effects of social media
on mental health. Specifically it sought to answer the following.

1.What is the problem of social media use in the mental health of the
students?
2.How does social media affect your mental health?

3.How does social media use interact with a person’s developmental stage
for measuring risk of mental health impact?

Hypothesis

There is a significant relationship between social media and mental health

Scope and Delimitation

This study only focuses on the influence of social media to mental health of
the selected grade 11 students of DINAS NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL enrolled
during s.y 2024-2025.

Conceptual Framework
Significance of the study

The purpose of the study about the impact of social media on students
mental health is to investigate the relationship between social media use and
it’s effect on mental health and sleep quality. The study aims to explore the
negative effects of social media on mental health, including increased
anxiety and depression, and to promote strategies for digital well-being and
healthy online behaviors. The findings of this study is beneficial to:

Student: The result of this study will help students to develop positive
mental health that can build relationships more effectively, make decisions,
and work together supporting them as they enter adulthood.

Parents: Parents to understand the basics of mental health in children to


help them identify Early warning signs and seek appropriate treatment.

Teachers: Teachers’ will understand further the importance of developing


mental health because it, affects not only their own well-being, but also the
quality of education and student achievement. Coping strategies can
effectively improve teacher’s emotional health.

Researchers: The outcome of this study will be a basic reference for


further study.

Definition of terms

Social media: These are digital platforms that allows users to create, share,
or exchange information ideas, and pictures/videos in virtual communities
and networks.

Mental health: These are defined not just in terms of mental disorder, in
which realises, his or her own potential, can cope with normal stresses of life,
and is able to make a contribution to her or his community.

Senior High school: This is the stage of education that follows senior high
school. In many countries it includes grade 11 and 12.

Addiction: The obsessive use and focus on social media websites and apps,
even though the use causes negative consequences such as relationship
issues, anxiety, and low self-esteem.
Cyberbullying and Harrassment Social media platform can provide a
breeding ground for cyberbullying and harrassment, which can have a
devastating impact on victims’ mental health.

Loneliness and isolation: Despite being designed to connect people,


social media can paradoxically contribute to feelings of loneliness and
isolation.
