2. Details Pre-PBL Stages


Week 9
Stage 1 Group Setting
 Divide students into groups of 6-8 person per group
 Establish Ground Rules to govern group functions
-‘How to wreck a team?’
- All members acknowledge and sign the agreement
 Facilitator presents unfamiliar situation or problem
- Define roles of tutors and students
- Lecturers/ Teachers as facilitator only and do not provide
answers or solutions
- Prepare work schedule/Gantt chart
- Students have different roles such as :
a) Leader (Chair meetings)
b) Recorder (Record discussions and research material)
c) Coordinator (Coordinate meetings and divide tasks)
d) Runner (Photocopy, printing, brings laptop)
Stage 2 Problem Identification
 Let the students read the instruction
 Present the scenario/problem
 Identify and clarify unfamiliar terms
 Internet IS NOT ALLOWED during this session
 List facts that are known from the scenario/problem (in column
FACTS-Log A)

Stage 3 Idea Generation

 Inquire the possible ideas to understand or solve problem (in


column IDEAS-)
 Every members in the group think of one idea. The number of
ideas is not limited (can be more than 2 ideas) and it is possible
not to have idea for certain fact.
Stage 4 Learning Issues
 Determine what needs to be learnt in order to understand or
solve problem / Generate learning issues (in column LEARNING
ISSUES)
 Sort / Group the learning issue based on theme and number of
learning outcome (1st Log A)
 State the due date (for the next meeting- to gather info for 2 nd
Log A) and type of resource in column ACTION PLAN in Log A for
every learning issue.

Week 10
Stage 5 Self Directed Learning
 Everyone in the group need to seek relevant information to the
learning issues (depends on type of resource).
 Individual Log B is formed and based on learning issue
 Gather information from multiple resources such as websites,
books, journals, video and experts interview (this is to validate
the other resource).

Week 11
Repeat stage 1-stage 4
Stage 6 Synthesis and Application (formation of second log A in the
class)
 Evaluate the quality of information (Log B)
 Bring hard copy/soft copy with the facts/opinions are
highlighted to be discussed in PBL session.
 Apply relevant/previous knowledge from private study to the
problem (Log A – IDEAS– answer of learning issues)
 Discuss, develop, explain and justify the fact obtained
(conclusion of fact).
 Generate new learning issue and follow up question
(for 2nd Log A)
 Include personal and religious views (IOK)/ opinions
(Log A – IDEAS)
 Develop more learning issues if necessary (Log A –
LEARNING ISSUES - depends on fact, sometimes it is not
necessary)

i) Preparation of mind map

(a) The contents of mind map can be typewritten/handrawn


(b) The size of mind map is A4/A3
(c) Mind map must be submitted together with the logs on the date of
submission.
(d) You may refer sample of mind maps in itaaleem.
(e) Criteria of evaluation : more than 2 level of hirerachys, appropriate use of
key words, use of colours, size and type of font , linking lines and cross
lines.

ii) Preparation of presentation


(a) Students are required to prepare slides presentation.
(b) Students may integrate various technologies
(c) Duration of presentation: 20 to 30 minutes (2-3 minutes for each
member)
(d) Students must wear formal attire during presentation day.
(e) Criteria of evaluation including eyes and body contact with audience;
voice projection; presentation pace; response to audience questions
