MEM 614 – MACHINE DESIGN

Assignment No – 2
(Unit 2 – Shaft, Key and Coupling Design)

1. A solid circular shaft is subjected to a bending moment of 3000 N-m and a torque of 10
000 N-m. The shaft is made of 45 C 8 steel having ultimate tensile stress of 700 MPa and an
ultimate shear stress of 500 MPa. Assuming a factor of safety as 6, determine the diameter of
the shaft.

2. Find the diameter of a solid steel shaft to transmit 20 kW at 200 r.p.m. The ultimate shear
stress for the steel may be taken as 360 MPa and a factor of safety as 8. If a hollow shaft is to
be used in place of the solid shaft, find the inside and outside diameter when the ratio of
inside to outside diameters is 0.5.

3. Compare weight strength and stiffness of a hollow shaft of same internal diameter as that
of a solid shaft. The inside diameter of the hollow shaft is being 0.6 times the external
diameter. Both shafts have same material and length.

4. A square key of 10x10x75mm dimension is required to trasmit 1100N-m torque from a

60mm diameter solid shaft. Determine whether the length is sufficient or not if the
permissible shear stress and crushing stress intensities limited to 60 and 170MPa.

5. Determine the dimensions of the rectangular sunk key made up of mild steel for a 80mm
diameter mild steel shaft to transmit a torque of 135N-m. Assume shear stress =50N/mm2
and crushing stress =120N/mm2

6. Design a taper key for a shaft diameter 100mm transmitting 60kW at 300rpm. The
allowable compressive stress may be taken as 175N/mm2.

7. A 40kW power at 300rpm is transmitted from 50mm diameter shaft by means of Kennedy
keys. The keys are made of C50 steel having yield strength of 390N/mm2 and factor of safety
of 3. Design the key.

8. A splined connection in an automobile transmission consists of 10 splines cut on a 70mm

diameter shaft. The height of each spline is 3mm and the keyways in the hub are 60mm long.
Determine the power that may be transmitted at 3000rpm if the allowable normal pressure on
the spline is limited to 5MPa

9. Design and make a neat dimensioned sketch of a muff coupling which is used to connect
two steel shafts transmitting 40 kW at 350 r.p.m. The material for the shafts and key is plain
carbon steel for which allowable shear and crushing stresses may be taken as 40 MPa and 80

MPa respectively. The material for the muff is cast iron for which the allowable shear stress
may be assumed as 15 MPa.

10. Design a clamp coupling to transmit 30 kW at 100 r.p.m. The allowable shear stress for
the shaft and key is 40 MPa and the number of bolts connecting the two halves are six. The
permissible tensile stress for the bolts is 70 MPa. The coefficient of friction between the muff
and the shaft surface may be taken as 0.3.

11. Two 35 mm shafts are connected by a flanged coupling. The flanges are fitted with 6
bolts on 125 mm bolt circle. The shafts transmit a torque of 800 N-m at 350 r.p.m. For the
safe stresses mentioned as Safe shear stress for shaft material = 63 MPa; Safe stress for bolt
material = 56 MPa; Safe stress for cast iron coupling = 10 MPa; Safe stress for key material =
46 MPa Solution. Calculate 1. diameter of bolts ; 2. thickness of flanges; 3. key dimensions ;
4. hub length; and 5. power transmitted.

12. Design a cast iron protective type flange coupling to transmit 15 k W at 900 r.p.m. from
an electric motor to a compressor. The service factor may b e assumed as 1.35. The following
permissible stresses may be used : Shear stress for shaft, b olt and key material =40 MPa ,
Crushing stress for bolt and key =80 MPa, Shear stress for cast iron =8 MPa , Draw a neat
sketch of the coupling.

13. Design a bushed-pin type of flexible coupling to connect a pump shaft to a motor shaft
transmitting 32 kW at 960 r.p.m. The overall torque is 20 percent more than mean torque.
The material properties are as follows: (a) The allowable shear and crushing stress for shaft
and key material is 40 MPa and 80 MPa respectively. (b) The allowable shear stress for cast
iron is 15 MPa. (c) The allowable bearing pressure for rubber bush is 0.8 N/mm2 . (d) The
material of the pin is same as that of shaft and key. Draw neat sketch of the coupling.

14. A marine type flange coupling is used to transmit 3.75 MW at 150 r.p.m. The allowable
shear stress in the shaft and bolts may be taken as 50 MPa. Determine the shaft diameter and
the diameter of the bolts.

15. An universal coupling is used to connect two mild steel shafts transmitting a torque of
6000 N-m. Assuming that the shafts are subjected to torsion only, find the diameter of the
shaft and the pin. The allowable shear stresses for the shaft and pin may be taken as 55 MPa
and 30 MPa respectively.
