“Seismic Analysis of a Building Structural Frame in accordance with NSCP 2010

using Static Lateral Procedure.”

Problem:
A 5-Storey apartment building is designed with a special moment-resisting space
frame of reinforced concrete without shear wall. Its elevations and typical floor
framing plans are shown below. The estimated gravity load if 6000 KN for the roof

The building has a foundation of soil profile type 𝑆𝐷at 20 kilometers away from Type B
level, 10000 KN for the second floor level and 8000 KN for the rest of the floor levels.

seismic source in Seismic Zone 4. All columns are 400mm x 600mm in cross-section.
Due to earthquake, compute:
1). The lateral force distribution on the building,

3). The story drifts with 𝐸𝑐=21,500 MPa.

2). The factor of safety against overturning about the base.

4). The lateral force distributions on each frame of the building, and
5). The shear, axial force, and end-moments of each column and girder.

Reference: NSCP 2010: Sec. 208.4 Criteria Selection

The Seismic Importance Factor, I = 1.00

 Use Type 𝑆𝐷 Stiff Soil Profile

From Table 208-4 Near-Source Factor 𝑁𝑎, Seismic Source Type B, > 10Km, Na = 1. 0
From Table 208-3 Seismic Zone Factor: 4 (Visayas Region), Z = 0.40

From Table 208-5 Near-Source Factor 𝑁𝑣, Seismic Source Type B, > 15 Km, Nv = 1. 0

From Table 208-7 Seismic Coefficient – Soil Profile Type 𝑆𝐷 , 𝐶𝑎 = 0.44𝑁𝑎 = 0.44
From Table 208-8 Seismic Coefficient – Soil Profile Type 𝑆𝐷, 𝐶𝑣 = 0.64𝑁𝑣 = 0.64
From Table 208-11A Earthquake-Force-Resisting Structural Systems of Concrete, for
a Moment-Resisting Frame System, Special reinforced concrete moment frames, R =
8.5

Height of Building, hn = 21 m
Building Profile:

W1 = 10,000 KN, W2 = 8,000 KN, W3 = 8,000 KN, W4 = 8,000 KN, W5 = 6,000

Seismic Dead load at each floor level,

KN
Page |4

Total Seismic Dead Load of Building, W = 40,000 KN

The total design base shear in a given direction shall be determined from the

𝐶 𝑣𝐼
following equation:
𝑉= 𝑊 (208 − 4)
𝑅𝑇
𝐶𝑣𝐼 (0. 64)(1.
0) (40, 000)
𝑉= 𝑊 =
𝑅𝑇 (8. 5)(0. 7161)

𝑉 = 4, 206 𝐾𝑁

The value of T may be determined from one of the following methods:

Method A: For all buildings, the value T may be approximated from the following
equation:
𝑇 = 𝐶𝑡(ℎ𝑛)3/4, where 𝐶𝑡 = 0.0731 for reinforced concrete moment-resisting frames

𝑇 = 𝐶𝑡(ℎ𝑛)3/4 = 0.0731(21)3/4 = 0. 7161

and eccentrically braced frames.

2. 5𝐶𝑎𝐼
The total design base shear need not exceed the following:
𝑉= 𝑊 𝐸q. (208 − 5)
𝑅
2. 5(0. 44)(1. 0)
𝑉 (40, 000) = 5, 176 𝐾𝑁
= 8.
5
The total design base shear shall not be less than the following:
𝑉 = 0. 11 𝐶𝑎𝐼𝑊 𝐸q. (208 − 6)
𝑉 = 0. 11 (0. 44)(1. 0)(40, 000) = 1, 936 𝐾𝑁
In addition, for Seismic Zone 4, the total base shear shall also not be less than the

0. 8𝑍𝑁𝑣𝐼
following:
𝑉= 𝑊 𝐸q. (208 − 7)
𝑅
0. 8(0. 4)(1. 0)(1. 0)
𝑉 (40, 000) = 1, 506 𝐾𝑁
= 8.
5
Therefore, use 𝑉 = 4, 206 𝐾𝑁

The total force shall be distributed over the height of the structure in conformance
with Equations (208-13), (208-14) and (208-15) in the absence of a more rigorous
procedure.
𝑛

𝑉 = 𝐹𝑡 + 𝐸q. (208 − 13)

∑ 𝐹𝑡
𝑖=1
The concentrated force 𝐹𝑡at the top, which is in addition to 𝐹𝑛, shall be

𝐹𝑡 = 0. 07 𝑇𝑉 𝐸q. (208 − 14)

determined from the equation:

𝐹𝑡 = 0. 07 𝑇𝑉 = 0. 07 (0. 7161)(4, 206) = 211 𝐾𝑁

𝐹𝑡 need not exceed 0.25V and may be considered as zero where T is 0.7 second or less.
𝐹𝑡 ≤ 0. 25𝑉 = 0. 25(4, 206) = 1, 052 𝐾𝑁
Page |5

Therefore, use 𝐹𝑡 = 211 𝐾𝑁

The remaining base shear force,

∑(𝐹𝑖) = 𝑉 − 𝐹𝑡 = 4, 206 − 211 = 3, 995 𝐾𝑁

The remaining portion of the base shear shall be distributed over the height of the

(𝑉 − 𝐹𝑡)𝑤𝑥ℎ𝑥
structure, including Level n, according to the following equation:

𝐹𝑥 𝑤 𝑒𝑞. (208 − 15)

∑ ℎ
= 𝑛

𝐹 = 𝑤𝑥ℎ𝑥∑ 𝐹
