#Ans:# Any reasonable answer. Suggested answer:

 Active participation in UN affairs: China is a founding member of the United
Nations and is one of the permanent members of the UN Security Council. It has a
veto on resolution related to international peace and safety. China actively
participates in multilateral diplomatic activities in the peacekeeping, humanitarian
aid and other areas. It also helps resolve issues such as the global financial crisis,
tensions in the Middle East, international energy security, environmental protection
and climate change to maintain international peace and security.
 Join the World Trade Organisation: China actively participates in international
affairs by joining the World Trade Organisation. China joined the World Trade
Organisation in 2001 and opened its market in accordance with WTO rules, which is
conducive to China's participation in international economic cooperation and
international division of labour, promoting domestic and international economic
development. China also directly participates in the decision of international trade
rules and deals with trade frictions through consultations.
 Form regional organisations: China increases its international influence by
participating in regional organisations, such as forming Shanghai Cooperation
Organisation, participating in the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Organisation,
holding BRICS summit with other emerging economies and establishing dialogues
with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

The China threat theory has presented in different forms in the Western media. It can
be divided into military threat and economic threat.
Military threat means that China increases its military expenditure to research on and
develop all kinds of armaments, and carries out military exercises. This indicates that
China plans on military expansion. In addition, some countries say that China has
conducted the human spaceflight project and lunar exploration project for military
purposes. They believe that China is trying to establish hegemony in the outer space.
With regard to economic threat, some Western countries claim that the prices of
Chinese exports are low. This will result in global deflation. On the contrary, some critics
say that as the Chinese economy develops and population rises, the demand of China for
energy, resources and food will increase greatly. This will lead to price increase for all
kinds of goods, bringing about the threat of global inflation.
3. What challenges does China face with reference to foreign trade? (4 marks)

#Ans:#
 Lacking the right to speak in the international arena: The achievements made by
China in its development and its rapid movement towards the world are recognised by
the international community. However, in the political and economic aspects, China is
still constrained by the rules formulated by the West. China only has limited power to
represent and to speak up in international organisations. We can take the International
Monetary Fund (IMF) as an example. After the Global Financial Tsunami in 2008, the
Western powers have become more dependent on China, but the status of China was
weak in the IMF. Whether China can expand its voting power is ultimately to be decided
by the Western countries.
 Provoking criticism by the international community: In the aspect of resolving
international affairs, China bears much pressure from international opinions due to the
ideological differences between China and the Western powers. In 2008, for instance, the
Sudanese government suppressed and massacred the anti-government members in
Darfur. Since China has established foreign relations with Sudan, some countries
requested China to mediate. However, the Chinese government said it would not
interfere in the internal affairs of the Sudanese government. This provoked criticism on
the Chinese government by the international community.

40,000 overseas training places to them.
Last year, the trade volumes between China and African countries exceeded

Source 1 China assisted African countries in fighting the COVID-19 epidemic

Chaired by Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Extraordinary China-Africa
Summit on Solidarity against COVID-19 was held on the 16 June via video
conferences.
As the outbreak persists, President Xi promised that China would continue to
do whatever it could to support Africa's response to the epidemic, including
providing medical supplies to African countries, dispatching medical expert teams
to Africa and building disease control centres there etc.
However, some critics questioned that China provided aid since it had coveted
the energy supply in Africa and wanted to enhance its international status.

 Reinforcing the China threat theory: While China is actively assisting other
countries, some countries may feel threatened by China’s increasingly important role
in the international community. Some critics may question the motivation of China
and worry that China would pose a threat to the world order.
 Arousing energy disputes: In light of China’s rapid economic development and
increasing demand for energy, some may believe that China is committed to assisting
African countries just because it covets the energy supply in Africa. Therefore, China
bears much pressure from international opinions.
