Topic: Functions
Lecture#2 Week#3 Date: / /2021
Objective: After this lesson students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the definition of a
function and its graph, understand the basic concepts of one-to-one functions, understand the basic concept of
functions and its operations and analyze examples of functions and its operations.

Function: A function f is a rule that assigns to each element x in a set A exactly one
element, called f (x) in a set B .

One-to-One Function (Injective): A function with domain A is called 1-to-1 function if
NO TWO elements in set A have the same image.

Onto Function (Surjective): A function is onto if every element of set B have a pre image
in set A .

Vertical Line Test: A curve in the coordinate plane is the graph of a function if
and only if no vertical line intersects the curve more than once.

Horizontal Line Test: A function is one-to-one if and only if no horizontal line

intersects its graph more than once.
