Topic: The DOMAIN of a Function
Lecture#3 Week#4 Date: / /2021
Domain: For a function f , the set of all possible inputs is called the domain of f . OR

Domain: The set of all real numbers for which the expression is defined as a real number.
Rules: When finding the domain, remember:

 RULE#1: If a polynomial function without radicals or variables in the denominator.

For this type of function, the domain is all real numbers .

1) f ( x )=2 x +5 2) f ( x )=x +3 x−10

2

 RULE#2: A function with a fraction with a variable in the denominator. Set the
denominator not equal to zero and solve.

1) f ( x )= x +3 2 ¿ f ( x )=
x −x
2

2 x+2
3) f ( x )= x + x−6
2 4) f ( x )= x −1 2

 RULE#3: The domain of a cube root or fifth root function is the set of all real numbers.
1) f ( x )= √ x−1
3
2 ¿ f ( x )=√ 7−3 x
5

 Rule#4: If the function is having a square root or even (4th, 6th, etc.) root in its
numerator, then set it greater than or equal to zero and solve.

1) f ( x )= √ x +3 2) f ( x )= √2 x−6
4

3) f ( x )= √−4 x +12 4 ¿ f ( x )= √ x −9
6 2

 Rule#5: If the function is having a square root or even (4th, 6th, etc.) root in its
denominator, then set it greater than zero and solve.
