Lecture#3 -Domain of a function
Lecture#3 -Domain of a function
Domain: The set of all real numbers for which the expression is defined as a real number.
Rules: When finding the domain, remember:
RULE#2: A function with a fraction with a variable in the denominator. Set the
denominator not equal to zero and solve.

RULE#3: The domain of a cube root or fifth root function is the set of all real numbers.
1) f ( x )= √ x−1
3
2 ¿ f ( x )=√ 7−3 x

Rule#4: If the function is having a square root or even (4th, 6th, etc.) root in its
numerator, then set it greater than or equal to zero and solve.
1) f ( x )= √ x +3 2) f ( x )= √2 x−6

3) f ( x )= √−4 x +12 4 ¿ f ( x )= √ x −9

Rule#5: If the function is having a square root or even (4th, 6th, etc.) root in its
denominator, then set it greater than zero and solve.
