Lecture#1 Topic: SOLVING QUADRATIC EQUATIONS
Sec: (1, 2 & 3) Week#1&2 Date: 19-30/09/2021

Objective: After this lesson students should be able to understand the definition of quadratic equation,
Discriminant of quadratic equations and solve quadratic equation by different ways.

QUADRATIC EQUATION: An equation of the form a x 2 +bx +c=0 wherea ,b ,c are real numbers∧a≠ 0 .
Example: x 2=5 , ( x−4 )2=5 , 2
3 x −27=0 x + 2 x−3=0 ,
2 2
2 x +3=5 x

ZERO-PRODUCT PROPERTY: AB=0 if ∧only if A=0∨B=0

1) SOLVING SIMPLE QUADRATIC EQUATIONS: Find all real solutions of each equation.
a) x 2=5 2
b) ( x−4 ) =5 c) 3 x 2−27=0 d) 2 x 2−8 x=0

2) SOLVING BY FACTORING: Find all real solutions of the equation by factoring.

a) x 2+ 5 x =24 b) 2 y 2+ 7 y+ 3=0

c) 6 x ( x −1 )=21−x d) 3 x 2−13 x+12=0

THE DISCRIMINANT OF QUADRATIC EQUATION: The Discriminant of the general quadratic equation
2
a x +bx +c=0 (a ≠ 0) is D=b2−4 ac .

1. If D>0 , then the equation has two distinct real solutions.

2. If D=0 , then the equation has exactly one real solution.

3. If D<0 , then the equation has no real solutions.

THE QUADRATIC FORMULA: The roots of the quadratic equation a x 2 +bx +c=0 , where a ≠ 0, are

−b ± √ b2−4 ac −b ± √ D
x= or x= where D=b2−4 ac
2a 2a

3) Use the DISCRIMINANT to determine the number of real solutions of the equation and then solve by a
quadratic formula for x . Write exact answer if possible otherwise up to 2 decimal places.

a) x 2+ 2 x−5=0 b) 4 x 2−4 x +1=0
